Hi all, I have already posted this on the German list, but given the responses, this seems to be a bigger problem, hence the repost. The problem: I got a Palm Tungsten E2 yesterday. Of course, Palm only includes CD-ROMs for 'doze and Mac OS X. Up until now, I'd usually take such CDs and examine them on my Linux box, as many things can be used/installed without 'doze (e.g. PDFs, Palm apps, etc.). However, this time round: No go. I can mount the CD, but I cannot read anything - the directory I mount it on is empty. I can only read it in 'doze. On the German list, there were at least two more people with the same Palm and the same CDs and the same problem, so I'm curious as to what comes up on this list. For completeness' sake, here's what shows up in /var/log/messages if I try to mount one of those CDs: Command: mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /tmp/CD Result: Jan 13 10:12:57 angua kernel: hdc: packet command error: status=0x51 {DriveReady SeekComplete Error } Jan 13 10:12:57 angua kernel: hdc: packet command error: error=0x50 {LastFailedSense=0x05 } Jan 13 10:12:57 angua kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown Jan 13 10:12:57 angua kernel: cdrom: failed setting lba address space Jan 13 10:13:00 angua kernel: ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 3 Jan 13 10:13:00 angua udevd[2305]: get_netlink_msg: no ACTION in payload found, skip event 'mount' Jan 13 10:13:00 angua kernel: ISO 9660 Extensions: RRIP_1991A The drive is ok and another PC with the exact same hardware, but 'doze instead of SuSE had no problems reading the CD. Frustrating. :-( Cheerio, Thomas

Hm. Bootable CD? Odd.
Partition table? Surprise... Then try "fdisk -l /dev/hdc" on it. If it has partitions, then you can manually mount it. - -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.0 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Made with pgp4pine 1.76 iD8DBQFDx75RtTMYHG2NR9URAsWMAJ9TUeE1LtbrBXVdMUnGgaTLd7I1NACfe16h Nrdstg1MX7Cs3baY4bPoYJ4= =zDhN -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

I left that particular kind of potential frustration for last. My experience wtih "we support 'doze only!" companies has been less than stellar in the past... Cheerio, Thomas

I can sympathise with that statement. As, I'm sure, so can many more on this list :-( There's a bloody big crack in the wall where I bang my head.... -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Xmas may be over but, PLEASE DON'T drink and drive you'll make it to the next one that way. Ouch :-(
# fdisk -l /dev/hdc Note: sector size is 2048 (not 512)

Mmmm it sees an empty partition table; if I have a look at my suse 9.3 dvd, I get: | nimrodel:~ # fdisk -l /dev/hdc | Note: sector size is 2048 (not 512) | | Disk /dev/hdc: 8512 MB, 8512307200 bytes | 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 258 cylinders | Units = cylinders of 16065 * 2048 = 32901120 bytes | | Disk /dev/hdc doesn't contain a valid partition table And file gives a diferent info than yours: | nimrodel:~ # file -s /dev/hdc | /dev/hdc: ISO 9660 CD-ROM filesystem data 'SU930.001 ' (bootable) So, what we know is that yours is not an ISO 9660 cd-rom, and it has an empty partition table, so my guess is that it would be formatted whole, but in some type Linux does not recognize. Perhaps you could try several types, at random :-?
I have no idea what Palm did with those CD-ROMs...
If it is a protection scheme, a program that could by-pass it in order to create backups could determine what it is. But I don't know of any such program, lost track of them after "copyrite" for msdos 5-1/4" disquetes in the eighties. - -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.0 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Made with pgp4pine 1.76 iD8DBQFDyC4ftTMYHG2NR9URAgB1AKCMNB/Z/Kb1jnkYT1kOqS0Ifo/MEwCeO/yq nJirpJED81X/Sd+MBwjjxdg= =4RcR -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

I'll try that later on, maybe. I already tried vfat - to no avail.

It would have to be some odd protection scheme - back home, I noticed that even my ageing Win98 installation (not Win98SE) can read that CD-ROM with no problems, so it would have to be something that was known already in 1998... :-} Cheerio, Thomas

I understand that windows can load a driver for those. - -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.0 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Made with pgp4pine 1.76 iD8DBQFDy5y0tTMYHG2NR9URAmtcAJ4hmjUxHYDcuSw1SEQkGcxzONOtrACfbp4w XbQgrUENBqi5wHwowCFKsy8= =yuMa -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
