Hi, I am trying to install SuSE 6.4. But it does not recognize Windows, and so it will install itself by taking the whole HD. Is there a way to solve this problem? Thanks. @) M.C. -- Sent through Global Message Exchange - http://www.gmx.net -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

I think you might have to do some partitioning. I prefer to have seperate disks for each OS but that is not always possible. I am going to assume you are somewhat new to linux, please forgive me if I am wrong. Windows and linux have to reside on different partitions. You will need at least one for windows and anywhere from two on up for linux depending on what you want to do. In order to break up your disk into different partitions you will need to use something like fips which will be in the /dosutils directory on the first cd if you bought the boxed set. If you don't mind installing windows again you can also use fdisk which is a dos util for creating disk partitions. fips is used for resizing and possibly creating partitions ( I don't really remember ). Get back to me and give me some more info on your situation so I know if I am going in the right direction with this. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
The new graphic installer (Yast 2?) does try to partition the whole disk. Use the original text based installer. I believe this in on the 2nd CD. Jeffrey Quoting Damian Slavek <damianks@netnet.net>:

There's a problem? :-) I haven't looked at 6.4, but YAST2 in 6.3 gives you the option of selecting existing partitions to destroy, and then uses the largest single piece of free disk space (NOT in any partition) for the install. If you have Windows taking up the entire disk in one partition, then the only way YAST2 (as of 6.3) could do the install at all would be by destroying Windows and occupying the entire disk. YAST1 (which you can get to by booting the *second* CD) has more options, but still (again as of 6.3) cannot split an existing partition. There *are* ways to do this. The two most popular programs for the purpose are Partition Magic which is commercial software, or fips whichs is free and may well be somewhere on the CDs. AFAIK Partition Magic is strictly DOS/Windows, while I believe fips comes in versions for several OSes. In any event you will need to defrag your Windows partition before you start, and I *strongly* recommend backing it up as well. Once that is done, either of them can shrink your existing Windows partition and create free space or a second partition (same thing for our immediate purposes). The remaining Windows partition *should* be fully operational, but this is less than 100% guaranteed. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Don, I already sent him similar instructions. I apologize for not cc'ing to the list. Last I heard from him, he was off in search of PM, or possibly FIPS (hey, it's free) Monte Don Edwards wrote:

Partition Magic version 4 and 5 support creating and resizing ext2 partitions. I have used it many time to create and resize linux partitions without any problems.

IMHO PM and its ilk suck, and while all looks well today, wait for about a year (3 months). A majority of my calls are from people with pm and their system is not booting. But have fun for now. Bobby Geortgilakis wrote:

Yep copy the dos files from the partion magic directroy to a dos boot disk , and the overlay file or what ever the second file needed. then access it from floppy . You will then be using the text based commands / interface , no gui here. The gui is just a fron tend to the dos program any way. Jus be carfull you select the correct chioce or you coould blow away the wrong partion. You may want to make a dos boot disk that has fdisk , sys , format and what other utils you may need. Theyu do com in handy. At 06:12 AM 6/4/2000 +0000, tabanna wrote:

All the required PM4 files fit onto a single 1.44Mb floppy, so you get the GUI too. You have to be careful to copy the largest files first though. My emergency partition tweaker disk has the dos boot files plus PM4. On Sun, 4 Jun 2000, Samy Elashmawy wrote:
