YOU and Mozilla 1.0?

Why isn't Mozilla 1.0 available via YOU? The 1.1Alpha is already released...it can't take that long to verify 1.0 vs. .9.8 that shipped with SuSE 8.0. I sure would like to upgrade to 1.0.

If you want to upgrade there is nothing stopping you. I upgraded to 1.0rc1 and now to 1.1a with ease by following the instructions on the mozilla site. Here's the link: http://www.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla1.1a/ I've only been using SuSE for 2 months and had no trouble figuring this out. No offense, but I'm often surprised on this list by the number of people who feel if YOU/Yast2 can't install a piece of software then it is somehow uninstallable. I agree it'd be nice if SuSE held our hands through every modification of our systems, but personally I'd rather the folks at SuSE devote their time to working on improving the distribution in other ways and ask me to figure out how to follow clear instructions off a software developer's web site. Let's give them a break and take on some work for ourselves! We just might learn something. Rodd Ahrenstorff wrote:

You can always get new SuSE RPMs of Mozilla from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/mozilla The reason they don't go into the main update tree is that there are a lot of other packages that are linked against Mozilla libraries (Evolution, Galeon, Nautilus to name but three - there are lots more) and since Mozilla API was not frozen until 1.0, these packages could break and should be rebuilt against the new version of Mozilla. So, what started as updating one package has suddenly become updating several. And what if one of those packages results in more dependent packages needing to be rebuilt, and then more again? You see why it's not available by YOU? But, if you want to use the SuSE packages, you can, just be prepared for certain things not to work. Of course, you can get packages of Galeon and Evolution that work with the new Mozilla builds from SuSE at www.usr-local-bin.org (shameless, I know...) James

And a supplementary question. Why does RPM think that mozilla-1.0rc2-3.rpm dated May 17 (both from the supplementary/GNOME/update_for_8.0 directory) is newer than mozilla-1.0-10.rpm dated Jun 21?

That's to do with the way RPM handles version numbers, I think it goes alphabetically. Course in the old days, you didn't call versions 1.0RC2 or whatever, it would have been 0.99.99.2 or something like that, which would have been fine... Release Candidates, bullocks more like ;)
