It is VERY BAD to connect or disconnect P/S2 ports while a PC is powered up. Having the system lock-up is getting off easy. It is quite possible to blow the PS/2 port and have to replace the motherboard. Don

:Anyone knows why when I unplug my PS/2 mouse, and then :when start X windows, my computer will not respond to anything I :press in my keyboard and I have to restart my computer using the :reset switch.
It is my understanding that it is very bad idea to unplug a ps/2 connector while the system is powered up. I have only heard this second hand but here are some sources:
