9.3 Pro Headless Install Possible?
I've done some googling on headless installs and have only been able to find references to SLES having that capability by using pxe and VNC. Does anyone know whether or not it is possible to do a headless install of 9.3 Pro, and if so, where there might be a howto on the subject? Or 9.1 Pro, if I may be forgiven for piggybacking....

Use remote administration in yast to configure server, and install rdesktop on client. Connect like you would in vnc, else use ssh for just the cammand line, and you can run yast in a terminal. cheers -- Chadley Wilson Redhat Certified Technician Cert Number: 603004708291270 Pinnacle Micro Manufacturers of Proline Computers ==================================== Exercise freedom, Use LINUX =====================================

Sorry forgot, for VNC desktop style sharing use system-->remote access --> Desktop sharing to set it up on the server.

I can't see how that can possibly work. Enabling remote administration in Yast would require that the headless machine have SuSE installed on it so I could enable it. I know how to remotely administer, what I don't know is how to remotely install a new install to a headless box that is 3000 miles away from me in a datacenter that I have no physical access to. Well you asked how to do a headless install of 9.3 Hence 9.3 would be the server, so you should enable remote administration. This only allows it, but doesn't provide the tools required, so you need to setup desktop sharing. etc.. You can then install vnc or rdesktop on your windows or debian box or what ever you like, and pull up the desktop from your 9.3 box. To be honest this method is a waste of network resources and system resources, The problem with the VNC style apps, is that you must have an X session running on the server for it to work. I prefer using ssh myself. Setup the box: In the bios set halt on no errors default run level 3 enable ssh and fish://user@server from your other linux PCs. Or use Putty from you windows PC. (I don't have a windows PC) :) For editing config file use quanta fish://user@server in the open dialog box, Your "A" away!! :) By the way, Yes you can do it in 9.1 as well Good luck -- Chadley Wilson Redhat Certified Technician Cert Number: 603004708291270 Pinnacle Micro Manufacturers of Proline Computers ==================================== Exercise freedom, Use LINUX =====================================

Are you saying that you place an order for a new box and the remote datacentre staff pull it off their shelf, plug it in and switch it on for you? Provided it has an operating system, a known IP and you can ssh or telnet in then your question seems to be "How does one replace the existing OS with SuSE 9.x? - from afar" N'est pas?

What the hell does this have to do with a FRESH install? Does the remote data center have IP based KVM switches? If they do this would give you remote access to the console during the bootup phase and allow for a remote install. I have used one in the past to remote admin a box in NC from FL (USA), works great. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

Skipping the other parts of this thread, I'll answer your question directly... Yes, 9.3 pro does allow "vnc installation". I've tested it on a local network, so I know it works. I've never done it remote but TCP/IP is TCP/IP.... As to how you will get get your packets routed across 3000 miles is a problem which I assume you know how to solve. As to the boot prompt on a headless server, that I've never tried, but I suppose you'd get a text prompt? On a console? How do you configure the bios to boot from DVD? The procedure for VNC install is described in the Admin manual see: "Chapter 3. Special Installation Procedures / 3.3. Installation with VNC" Basically you choose install in the boot propmt and enter the following parameters "vnc=1 vncpassword=<xyz> install=<source>" Jerry P.S. On all my servers I load the entire contents of the DVD into a directory to avoid having to request the dvd during configurations. But you mentioned you know how to do remote admin....
