Since dicovering that hdparm can be used to set the dvd's dma, even though yast2 says it can't, I've been able to watch dvds in linux, and it works quite well. However, in xine, I can't seem to get it to play discs from another region. Searching the net, all I can find are HOWTOs and FAQs that tell me that the disk is probably from another region - well, duh :) Now, I can watch the dvds in VLC, so I know it's not a hardware restriction (unfortunately vlc has other problems, such as audio/video synchronisation, but it could be an option in the future). So the question is: has anyone been able to get xine to play DVDs from a region other than their default, and if so how? Anders

http://xine.sourceforge.net/ I believe they will point you to the css library. Although do be careful as my Xine had been segfaulting a lot with Xine. Matt

Yep, been there. I've installed the complete_xine package they link to, and it runs very well. It's just this thing with regions. In their FAQ they mention the error (demux 0x000000 should be 0x000001), but they don't say how it can be fixed. Since it works with vlc it almost has to work somehow with xine. You're in the UK, right? That's region 2 as well, I think. Can you watch american DVDs with xine? Anders

Just confuse you, I am a UK citizen living in the US. <rant> I hate regions, seems to favour this one market. I just hope the EU has the balls to stand up to them (MPAA) and tell them to shove their regions in a place where the Sun does not shine. </rant> Matt

Matt The css library enables you to watch encrypted dvds not dvds from another region. You can get xine rpms for suse including css patch from here: http://packman.links2linux.de/ That is what I am using here and it works fine. To watch region free dvds you need to change the drive to region free. I suggested a way to do that in my earlier post. Anders I have done thiis. I have a Pioneer dvd drive and what I did was a google search something like dvd region free patch. There are quite a few sites that give you programmes to download and apply to set the drive region free. As far as I remember they are all DOS programs so you need to use windoze to do it, and bear in mind its at your own risk. Sorry I can't quote specific urls because I reversed it by upgrading the firmware on the drive to solve othrer problems I was having with it and haven't bothered to go back and do it again as watchoing dvds from another region is not an issue for me. It did work while I had it applied though. HTH Mike
