Need advice: Setting up a gateway/dhcp server with 8.1 ?
Hi, Time to retire by home lan gateway and and rebuild it with SuSE 8.1. I have a small PC w/2 NIC's and an xDSL connection w/static IP. The 2nd NIC connects to a switch for the other LAN connections. Never setup a DHCP server so my question is what's the best approach with SuSE 8.1 Pro ? Be nice to hear if you know of some on-line docs, etc. I'd like to have (djbdns) dnscache also. Thanks Dee

Using Yast, install bind9. You will have to edit the file /etc/dhcpd.conf to match with your network addresses. Having the correct settings is the most difficult task in configuring a dhcp server. If it is of any help, I can let you have the file on my network to get you up and running. This file has the bare minimum settings for a dhcp server.

There is a chapter about ISC's dhcpd in the SuSE Linux Administration Guide (/usr/share/doc/packages/suselinux-adminguide_en/SuSE-Linux-Adminguide-8.1.0.0dx86.pdf) I use it on SuSE 7.3; I guess it works OK on SuSE 8.1 too. -- Alexandr.Malusek@imv.liu.se
