Sun's W1100z and SuSE question
I'm getting a Sun W1100z workstation and I'm going to load Solaris x86, Windows XP and SuSE 9.1 Pro on it. While it will basically be used by me at my station it will also double as a test machine for some of the products we make. Does anyone see a problem with using the 64-bit SuSE on this machine? I want to use it as my primary OS....with Solaris and Windows being optional OSs. Right now I run the standard SuSE 9.1 on my Intel machine. Sun W1100z ?
That's a single opteron based box right ?
Im running suse 9.1 X86_64 on a dual opteron (metropolis) box as a testbed,
and it works like a charm.
I had redhat 3 WS ES update 1 on it befpre (as that's what Sun ships it
wi9th) but that gave me a horror of a time with NFS.
The only thing is that you *must* install the latest NVidia drivers (6106).
I don't know which ones yast/you picks for you, but the 5xxx serieas
drivers will lock the ssytem when running 32bit OGL applications
(quake3 to name just one)
Apart from that, the box will just voom (esp.if you have the FX3000 video
card ;) )

I figured rather than making it just a test unit, I might as well use it. No games though.

Any problem with Windows XP running on it? Again....for test purposes. Tom -- Tom Nielsen Neuro Logic Systems, Inc. 1.805.389.5435 x18 www.neuro-logic.com

Not sure what ``just office stuff'' means for you .. Im not sure if you canr un Xover office on it. BUt you can run OpenOffice without problems.

Even that one will go Voom, if you put 4000 volts through it

Apart from the fact that it's windows XP you mean ;) ..
NO, if you install a 32bit OS on that box,k it will behave just as a 32bit
AMD cpu.
Im not sure if the network card and such will be supported by windows, but
I reckon they will.

I NEED crossover office to run. I'll give it a shot. Office stuff is just kmail, openoffice, blah blah. Since it's a work system, I don't run games or anything on it. Maybe connection to my digital camera...but that shouldn't be a problem. Tom -- Tom Nielsen Neuro Logic Systems, Inc. 1.805.389.5435 x18 www.neuro-logic.com
