[opensuse] download.opensuse.org (Domain name not found) - "zypper up" fails after upgrade to 12.1
I updated my perfectly working openSUSE 11.4 to 12.1, after which "zypper up" fails and no repos on download.opensuse.org can be used - linux-yu4c:~ # zypper up Download (curl) error for 'http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/12.1/repo/oss/content': Error code: Connection failed Error message: Could not resolve host: download.opensuse.org (Domain name not found) Abort, retry, ignore? an interesting problem, did you find a solution? have you checked /etc/nsswitch.conf for a line like: hosts: files dns my new install has ... well an odd entry I can't seem to copy here. have you tried putting an entry in /etc/hosts (just as a test, it's not a long term fix, of course) with the IP you pulled with the host command? sorry if this was already fleshed out in another thread, I've been away for holidays and might have missed many mails. Thanks. -- Even the Magic 8 ball has an opinion on email clients: Outlook not so good. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I tried the /etc/hosts trick. It had no effect. Still no resolution; on that network I cannot use zypper. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Adam, is it related to the network or the specific computer? Have you tried that same computer on another network? Is there a proxy server configured on that computer? Don't just look in the normal place - there is more than one place where proxy servers can be configured that can affect zypper (e.g. in /root/.curlrc - relevant since zypper runs as root and therefore runs curl as root to handle its downloading). I've been caught with this before where the "Domain name not found" (actually in my case it was "host not found", since the proxy was referenced by IP address) actually related to the proxy server, even though the error message said download.opensuse.org. Otherwise, it could be a firewall or routing issue on that network, in which case you'll have to liaise with the network admin (if that is not you). Have you tried pinging download.opensuse.org, either by hostname or ip address? If that doesn't work, traceroute may be helpful. What about browsing via the web to download.opensuse.org? Does that work? If other tools can get to it but zypper can't, I'd be looking at the curl config files to see if anything is misconfigured there (unless, of course, zypper no longer uses something other than libcurl on 12.1, in which case replace curl with whatever other tool is applicable). Dig deeper. Understand the components involved in the process.
