Disaster {was Re: [SLE] Imapd in SuSE-8.2 does not work}
Thanks a lot (especially to David Krider) for all the help. However, nothing so far worked out for me. Why are we having this problem? David mentioned once that it is because my password is a plain text? [ I am sure that he meant some more. ] Can I just avoid all this hassle and use a strange characters as my new password? That does not sound right. I cannot just spend any more time on this one. I am giving up and The 8.2 upgrade turned out to be a disaster, because if I switch to "pine" as my mail client, I know I cannot deal with the spam mails at all. I blame the SuSE team. They should give us a clean upgrade path. It is not a clean upgrade at all. I would say it is terrible. Strange thing is that there is no mention about it in the Administration Guide. The more strange is that not many people are complaining about it. I don't understand why? Are they not using Pop3d or Imapd at all? Plesae help from someone who uses Mozilla-mail as his/her mail client with no problem. Thanks a lot. G. Hugh Song

There are lots of ways around this problem. Using fetchmail and procmail along with spamassassin has always worked for me. No, I don't use imap but I do use pop3 to get my email into any email client I prefer. Sorry you don't like 8.2 but every release is going to have one problem or another. I guess you've found your problem. -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ + Bruce S. How adding this to /etc/imapd.conf? sasl_mech_list: PLAIN -- _ _ __ _____ _____ ___| |_ | '__| / __\ \ /\ / / _ \/ _ \ __| -o) | | _ \__ \\ V V / __/ __/ |_ /\\ |_|(_) |___/ \_/\_/ \___|\___|\__|_\_v rsweet@garagenetworks.net "there's no love in fear."

That would probably work for Cyrus. The _UW_ IMAP server rpm doesn't install an imapd.conf, nor a man page about the format, nor does it pay attention to it. If I can't get squirrelmail to do imaps, I might have to go to the more-involved Cyrus, but I hope not. Thanks, dk

Thank you very much. Now, it worked. But it is a terrible feeling because I really do not understand what has made my computer feed my emails now. What I did was I installed cyrus-sasl2-gssapi-2.1.12-31 cyrus-imapd-2.1.12-29 cyrus-sasl2-2.1.12-31 And tried to distinguish between Cyrus and UW-IMAP. I expected that yast2 installer would not allow both packages coexisting. Surprisingly, it showed no conflict. Anyway, I started "cyrus" from the yast2-profile manager not actually knowing what is going to be done on UW-IMAPs. The name "cyrus" does not strike me as an imap controller. Then, mozilla-mail suddenly asked me to verify certification. What is it? I did not want this crap. Does it mean that I cannot check my email when I am diconnnected from the net? What the hell is it? Why is it more complicated every day? Does SuSE really want their Linux distribution to be everyone's choice (such people like your in-laws)? Regards, G. H. Song
