Because you're running it as user, not as root.

no shit,
aha, is that the level we're on
how do you come to that conclusion?
That is the error you'd get if you tried to use rpm as a user, and I couldn't believe the apt/synaptic developers were holding an exclusive lock on the database simply by running it. red carpet just does a shared lock then. RPM v4 has multiuser capabilities, so why wouldn't they use it
running as root
Good for you.

SUSE made it an exclusive lock, to prevent problems (don't remember the exact details) -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

You probably have synaptic running, or another process that locks the rpm database. I just checked, I could reproduce the error message with a running synaptic, and trying 'apt update'. Cheers, Leen
no other process is running that would lock the DB On Tue, 2004-10-05 at 19:52 +0200, Leendert Meyer wrote:

Try: lsof | grep /var/lib/rpm/Packages and make your conclusions from the result. -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless
