Hi all, I am going to set up my first email server. At first, I thought about sendmail as MTA, because it is the standard and it is easy to configure with yast, but I am noticing that suse's rpms of sendmail (at least for 7.1) are not so up to date. So I am looking for another mta... What are the pro and cons about sendmail? What about qmail? What about postfix? I am already looking for some information about that, but I think I need your advices too:-) Praise

Simple answer. Go with postfix. -- Nadeem Hasan nhasan@nadmm.com http://www.nadmm.com/

Qmail's author places restrictions on distribution that most
distros don't want to deal with. If you want Qmail, download it and
build/install it for yourself.
Sendmail is one big program, the configuration file syntax is cryptic,
and it has had numerous security lapses over the years. When I get a
system that has sendmail on it, I replace it if I have the authority
to do so. If I don't I plead ignorance and don't accept
responsibility for the system. I'm not young any more and don't have
the patience to deal with difficult software unless it is irreplaceable.
I have Qmail on my laptop and Postfix on my desktop. I prefer
Postfix, but not enough to rip out a working Qmail system. There are
books on Qmail and Postfix, both by Richard Blum. The Postfix one is
adequate, but I was disappointed by the lack of advanced material.
Which ever package you choose, be prepared to spend a fair amount of
time on it. If you have a single computer with an always on Internet
connection and it has a real Internet name and IP address (no private
LAN names, no masquerading). It is relatively simple. If you have a
private LAN domain (i.e., domain and host names that are only in
/etc/hosts and are not resolvable from the Internet), set up a DNS
server first. It will make life much easier.
