What happened to the "locate" command in 10.1 in the past couple of weeks? It suddenly vanished. I used it not that long ago (?a couple of weeks ago) and now I get the error message '-bash: locate: command not found'! Cheers. -- This computer is environment-friendly and is running on OpenSuSE 10.1

I think this version of locate came with a limitation on number of uses - can't remember how many, but once you've used them all up, that's it. No more locate. :-) Having said that, you could have a look at /usr/bin/locate to see if it's still there. Also try "type locate". /Per Jessen, Zürich

That must be it- I've used it twice, reached the limit. Guess only way out is to reinstall 10.1 but this time I'll be more economical with the use of 'locate'. :-)

It's there but for some reason it's spelt "locale". :-) (I think James has the answer.) Cheers. -- This computer is environment-friendly and is running on OpenSuSE 10.1

Guess only way out is to reinstall 10.1 but this time I'll be more economical with the use of 'locate'. It's on my system, and I've applied all the available updates. gaf@gaflap:~> whereis locate locate: /usr/bin/locate /usr/share/man/man1/locate.1.gz
Note that it is in the findutils package. -- Jerry Feldman <gaf@blu.org> Boston Linux and Unix user group http://www.blu.org PGP key id:C5061EA9 PGP Key fingerprint:053C 73EC 3AC1 5C44 3E14 9245 FB00 3ED5 C506 1EA9

I must have installed it, and used it, on the other computer without remembering that I had to install the findutils package to be able to use locate :-( . findutils package will be installed on *this* computer in the next few minutes. Try "locate locate". ;-) Did you recently upgrade and forget to install findutils-locate?

Hmm.. doesn't do a thing, James. Still get the same error message... Ah, maybe if I reverse this and type "locate locate"? Nah, still the same error message.

Well, I didn't and I have never deliberately installed 'findutils-locate' (that I can remember), but this program is not installed. I'll install it now and will remember to do so in the future. Thanks for the solution :-) . Cheers. -- This computer is environment-friendly and is running on OpenSuSE 10.1

Oh, BTW, I forgot to congratulate you on hitting the big 6.9 on the SPAM-O-METER and getting a SPAM in your Subject field! Ah, the Mysterious Workings of the Suse SPAM-O-METER. (Even I managed a score of 5 in one of my messages :-) .) Cheers, -- This computer is environment-friendly and is running on OpenSuSE 10.1
