Hi all, First of all let me express my warm sympathy for everyone on this list who are doing so much for us all! Thanks a million! OK, now for the problems: Could anyone shed some light on this, I think I screwed up Configuration: SuSE 6.3, standard kernel, Pentium500, ES1371 sound, NE2000 PCI, I'd been trying to get sound to work. So I fiddled around with Alsa. Didn't work at first, then it did, than it didn't. For some reason (can't remember exactly) I assumed there was an IRQ conflict. I went ito the bios settings and had the PNP/PCI system reconfigure itself. I probably shouldn't have done that because after the reboot, SuSE didn't find the networkcard anymore. I finally got the networkcard back, by booting from CD2 and autoprobing modules (It found my networkcard on irq 5) and rebooting the installed system. . Again I fiddled around with Alsa and modules.conf. All of a sudden the soundcard was working! Yesss! But then I went into GNOME (btw I love the GNOME/Enlightenment comb) and forgot about another problem I (sometimes) have: After closing X, sometimes the (Samsung 17GLsi) monitor switches off and I can't get it back on without rebooting or restarting X, it mostly will not go back in textmode and when it does it seems to endlessly be "waiting for X server to shut down". This happens also with sax! Where should I look for this problem? Anyway, I rebooted and off course the networkcard could not be found. So I rebooted from CD, autoprobe, networkcard found, but now there is no more sound. I have the feeling that I shouldn't have to reboot all the time, but not being an expert, I have no idea where to look exactly. I checked /var/log/messages and in the failed bootsequence part I found a line that stated that the soundcard was found: kernel: es1371: found adapter at io 0xe000 irq 11 but some lines after that it says: kernel: ne.c: No PCI cards found. Use "io=0xNNN" for ISA cards.. The boot sequence after that (from CD2) doesn't mention the sound card at all, but as I said the network is back on line. Can anyone point me in the right direction? thanks! Try: cat /proc/interrupts and cat /proc/pci See if you can tell what interrupts are conflicting. Should get you started in the right direction. -- Bob EMail BobFi@SWBell.net A Truly Wise Man Never Plays Leapfrog With A Unicorn... -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
Thanks Bob, it helped. I read the /proc/pci showed me the options I had to put into modules.conf. Did it through yast, to be sure. Than I removed the alsa stuff from modules.conf, and enabled the kernel sound driver as explained in the comments in modules.conf. Everything is fine now. Thanks Any idea why alsa is there if the kernel does it for you? I find things like that pretty confusing. Anyway glad everythings works now. Still haven't solved the X problem, (monitor switches to standby mode after closing X) any ideas? Jeroen
