When you attempt to examine the contents of the floppy/cd, have you mounted them? If so how? (exact command used please). What have you got in the /etc/fstab for the floppy/cd? If you try to read the contents using the "ls" command what do you see? What error do you get? Kind regards, Simon gberta@sympatico.ca wrote:
Maybe I havn't explained myself in proper linux terms, be patient with me. Other linux distros I have used allow me to look at my cd-rom and floppy and their contents from within the konkorer file manager, or from StarOffice, SuSE does not let me. I moved a file from the floppy to my hard drive from the superuser xterm. But I couldn't even see the file from StarOffice or filemanager. I want permission as a regular user to do this without having to be in xterm.

As I recall, I think SuSE will create entries within /etc/fstab for devices such as floppies and CD readers. However I think it does not configure these devices to be mounted automatically at boot. One reason for this is that there may well be no media within these devices at this time. But if you still want to set them up to be mounted at boot time, add the "auto" option to the appropriate line for the device in /etc/fstab. Checkout "man mount" and "man fstab" for additional information.
Incidentally, why do you think this is a permissions problem?
Kind regards,
Simon

I have just installed 8.0 and when I try to copy files saved on floppy's and cd- roms to my new SuSE system, I can not read any files on these devices. I know it's a permission problem, I don't know how in YaST to set it up so I can read and save to these devices from the file manager or from StarOffice. I am the only user on my machine and want it to mount these on boot. Thanks Gord Berta gberta@sympatico.ca

Thanks Simon I was in StarOffice, File, Open, Floppy, to find the file I wanted to open and save to my hard drive. When I click on floppy there is nothing there. When I put the floppy in my other computer with mandrake it is there. In SuSE I logged into Gnome and was able through Nautilus to mount the floppy by typing mount floppy in the su xterm. Then I transfered the files. Both my cd-rom, cd-rw, and floppy have root permision. I want to change that so I don't always have to use the terminal, but handle my files normally in the file manager. In order for this to happen I have to configure them to gord, users. How in YaST or wherever do I do this? When I run as su, ls -l /dev/cdrom etc. it shows root root. I want it to show gord users, so me or my wife can handle files normally through the file manager etc. Thanks Gord On Wed, 2002-07-03 at 11:03, Simon Heaton wrote:

edit /etc/fstab as root /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 For each of the devices you want users to be able to handle, ensure there is an entry like above for user, the other options should remain as you currently have them. Ewan On Thu, 2002-07-04 at 01:29, Gordon Berta wrote:
