[opensuse] VERY slow network install
First thanks to whomever got the mini boot ISO to automatically load the repository without having to enter the URL... very nice. But has anyone notice the network install is painfully slow? I've tried on two systems using two internet connections (1mbps or faster) and even for a minimal text install (approx 600mb) it takes over 2hrs to complete the packages phase of the install? Many times I would look at the system and it would show the speeds in BYTES per second. The issue is not the network/internet connection. Also when I select "HTTP" in the boot menu it will show "OpenSuSE 11.0 FTP" in the install details screen. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No, I've always found the network install to be fast. -- Use OpenOffice.org <http://www.openoffice.org> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That is fault of selected mirror. It happens sometimes. I don't have handy link to wiki page that talks about proposal how to solve that, but it will be solved. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

When I've done a network install, it's always been from a local copy of the DVD ISO or sometimes from a DVD. I've never done it over the internet. -- Use OpenOffice.org <http://www.openoffice.org> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I rarely do a SUSE install except via HTTP over cable, usually gwdg.de, mirrors.kernel.org, or download.opensuse.org. It sometimes takes 2 hrs or more, but usually less than 1.5, not counting partitioning, which I always do in advance when not using LVM, or finding, downloading & setting up grub to launch the installation kernel & initrd. -- "Love is not easily angered. First thanks to whomever got the mini boot ISO to automatically load the repository without having to enter the URL... very nice. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Many times if you enable the remote repositories during a network install dependency checking on each package selection becomes "painfully slow" because
Andrew Joakimsen wrote: the package manager must resolve dependencies between the default local install repos (NFS or FTP, whatever) and the online repos + update. Many times I find myself just doing a basic local network install with no on-line repose and then coming back and adding packages later after I have disable the local repos. I have watched the screen for minutes between clicking one of the various packages and watching the green check appear. I feel your pain... -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E.
