Anyone have hardware 3d working on an ATI All-in-Wonder 128 card under SuSE 7.1? I did a test install (from scratch to a new drive) of the 2.4 kernel and XFree 4.0.2. but 3d doesn't seem to be working for either Heavy Gear II or Q3 (the only 2 3d games I have), even though I get messages to the effect that DRI is loaded when X starts up. What else could I check? I just installed everything today so I'm still a bit clueless about the new X setup, and this is my first experience with 2.4 as well. I did have both of these games working on the same hardware w/a 2.2 kernel and Xi's X server though, and I read through the "DRI User Guide". ( http://www.xfree86.org/4.0.1/DRI.html ) From what I can tell, everything seems ok cwexcepth that when I try to run /usr/bin/gears it segfaults. 2d support seems fine. FWIW, HG2 lets me start the game, but as soon as I start a mission it bombs out with a message saying, "Fatal signal: Segmentation Fault (SDL Parachute Deployed)". Q3 also gives me a segfault: [...] ----- R_Init ----- ...loading libGL.so: Initializing OpenGL display ...setting mode 3: 640 480 Using XFree86-VidModeExtension Version 2.0 XFree86-VidModeExtension Activated at 640x480 Received signal 11, exiting... .. so there's definitely a pattern here; I'm just not sure what to make of it. (libGL problem maybe? There is a /usr/lib/libGL.so from the xf86glxd.rpm there. Is that the right one?) Anyway, I'll go through it again tomorrow when I'm more alert - it was a long day even before I started installing 7.1. (just couldn't wait though! :) In the meantime, any clues are definitely appreciated. TIA, -John
HG2 does the same to me too, exact same error meesage. I think your 3D is working fine, but it maybe a compatibility with some Loki games and maybe glibc 2.2. If you check product requirements you will see it mentions glibc 2.1. E-mail support@lokigames with this issue. I ahve, but yet to recieve any reply. I would think that the gears program at least should work though, since that's part of the mesa package that SuSE distributes. That's not to say that HG2 doesn't have other problems (a glibc issue sounds quite plausable in fact), but I don't want to go pointing fingers at Loki until I at least have gears working. I haven't got 7.1 yet - I'm still on 6.4 - but will be upgrading in about a month's time when I get home (working overseas at the moment). I'm a bit concerned about this library issue - are there many packages from third parties that don't work on 7.1 because of the library update? In particular I'll need Vmware as stable as it is under 6.4, and want I'll to play some games (Q3A in particular). Is this too much to ask? Should I wait until companies like Vmware Inc update their packages, or am I worrying about nothing?
I am running VMware 2.0 and Q3A under SuSE 7.1 w/ the 2.2.18 kernels. It is a bad idea to interrupt the boot process on Win98 running in VMware. Other then that it works fine. I've done my taxes with TurboTax and they are a bitch this year. The audio of the video clips doesn't work with my sound "card" (Yamaha DS-XG and OSS). Q3A doesn't work with ALSA, but does with OSS. No BSOD. I shutdown X and restart it with Q3A as the client when I want to play. Since doing this I have had few, if any X lockups. When it locked up X, I could SSH in and run things including Sax, but the video card was always left in a strange state and I'd have to reboot. Both are more stable (or I've learned to work around the troublesome spots) under 7.1. I am using 3.3.6 X server. With your hardware, mileage may vary. I had an ATI AIW 128 Pro and had the same problem. I was told that 3D hardware acceleration for the r128 chipset wasn't due out until XFree 4.1. 3Ddiag couldn't find any 3D capable chipset either, so I switched to a Diamond Viper V770 and haven't had any problems since.

Have you run 3Ddiag? This will tell you which switch2xxx script to run to enable 3D, or tell you if any packages (i.e. mesasoft) are missing. Hope that helps! Ken

Please note, that "Accelerated support" means 2D acceleration here! This has nothing to do with 3D! It said "Symbolic Links ... failed!" under the tests for package "xf86_glx" section and suggested I run the switch2xf86_glx script. I ran the script & it doesn't complain about the symlink anymore. The bad news is I still get the segfaults. :( I reinstalled HG2 and Q3 after the SuSE stuff.. maybe that messed something up? Doesn't seem likely however as I installed both games as an unprivileged user to an unused dir. I guess I'll just wait for 4.1. The 2d stuff seems fine so the only reason I'd need 3d is for games, and I should be able to use the "old" Xi server for them. Not much time for games lately anyways. Thanks for the help though. -John
Ok, after installing some (theoretically unrelated) KDE stuff, some Gnome stuff, and having to shutdown/reboot due to a "rolling blackout", I thought I'd try again at getting 3d working on my all-in-wonder 128 card. 3Ddiag says: === Using /usr/bin/3dinfo ************************************************************ Verifying 3D configuration based on XFree86 4 for 3D board "ATI Technologies Inc ATI Rage 128 GL AGP 2x (1002@5246)": Tests for package "xf86_glx": package ... done. package files ... done. Symbolic Links ... failed! ================================================================ 3D Hardware acceleration is not used. To use 3D Hardware acceleration the skript "/usr/X11R6/bin/switch2xf86_glx" must be executed. ================================================================ Test for correct XFree86 version ... done. Tests for XFree86 configuration: Config File /etc/X11/XF86Config ... done. Driver ... done. Color Depth ... done. Extensions ... done. Options ... done. === ... but now, without (knowingly :) fixing anything, I run gears and don't get a segfault anymore. In fact, it says I get a over 500fps, implying that I -am- using 3d h/w accelleration, contrary to what 3dDiag says. hmmm. Also note that the "Symbolic Links ... failed!" message is back. I had fixed that once before (though it didn't seem to affect anything one way or another). This is without running the "switch2xf86_glx" suggested by 3dDiag BTW. Encouraged, if a bit perplexed, I then sucessfully ran Heavy Gear 2 as well. It's playable even at 1024x768 and with all effects turned on. hmmm^2 Sadly, I'm only 2 for 3 here. Quake III doesn't segfault anymore either, but it still doesn't work right.. it hangs with a blank screen just after printing "sound initialization" in the shell it was started from. :( -John
