Strange audio problem
Hello all Resending this with a different subject line, first time got no response. I can't get sound output as a regular user, but I can as root. I have a very funny sound problem. If I log in as root I have no problems with sound, If I log in as any other user I can not hear mp3 files, audio CD's or video DVD's. It was working fine until I updated something or installed a new package. Can not trace back to the moment it started. I am using Suse 10 rada@pavilion:~> uname -r 2.6.13-15.12-default rada@pavilion:~> rpm -qa alsa* alsamixergui-0.9.0rc1-546 alsa-firmware-1.0.13-0.pm.0 alsa-tools-gui-1.0.13-0.pm.0 alsa-devel-1.0.9-23 alsa-tools-1.0.13-0.pm.0 alsa-1.0.13-0.pm.0 If I log into root's deskotp, sound works without a problem. If I log in to any other users desktop there is no sound. If I log into a non root users' desktop and then in a console log in as root and try to play a sound file I get no sound. I am asking for help since I have no clue as to how to approach the problem. I really don't even know how to google for this one, I've tried without success. I don't have gnome desktop installed, but in Icewm and FVWM desktops there is also no sound output, so I do not thik it is a function of a kde problem itself. but this is a list of KDE packages related to sound that I am using Any ideas on how to proceed to fix it? You can use this (one single line): rpm -q -a --queryformat "%{INSTALLTIME}\t%{INSTALLTIME:day} %{BUILDTIME:day} %-30{NAME}\t%{VERSION} %{RELEASE} %35{PACKAGER}\n" | sort | less -S to find out what you have installed last, and undo. If it is a configuration issue, I would think of a permission problem, perhaps resmgr. I'm not an expert with that, sorry. - -- Cheers, Carlos -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Made with pgp4pine 1.76 iD8DBQFFLNBDtTMYHG2NR9URAsJWAJ4r3tp5Xh6hSagedShm1Yq3JXbNYgCghQVF mPqfkARwd9w/KJlYwM1mPxo= =leWP -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

I read your original post but had no answer to your problem. Still don't. But.... Is it possible that when you login as root, the KMix (volume control/mixer) is correctly configured with the volume up and all the correct inputs/outputs activated but the User Desktop(s) are not correctly configured? Create a brand new user and see if it works for that ID. If so this will tell you that something in your current environment for you login is causing the problem.

1) Are the modules loaded? What do you get if you run: lsmod | grep snd & lsmod | grep sound ? 2) Have you run the alsamixer and looked that nothing is "turned off" ?
