It isnt.. and ohh,, it will do dependency resolution and the user will not be asking this question. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Oh, so I can remove rpm from my system if I use zypper? Wrong, it is a front end to rpm that happens to do more like dependency checking. And dependency checking is only valid IF you have the correct repos configured. The OP was trying to install two rpms and selected the wrong one first. Try educating them on the proper use of rpm instead of telling them to use something else. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

And you can not do dependency solving with rpm alone, because the packages do not have the info. The info for dependency solving can only be found on the repos metadata. The packages nowdays do not say: Hey, I depend on package such and such. No, it says: I need library such and such. Is up to you to find and suply a package (any package) that supplies that library. The command rpm can not, on its own, find them. No longer. Therefore, the proper, easy, method nowdays is to use zypper instead of rpm directly. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Im educating him, nowdays you dont want to use rpm directly for daily tasks, fast and working package managers exist now. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

There are things that are akin to writing in assembly code when high level languages are available. You have to do all the detailed work that the compiler would do for you by hand. Its not scalable and its subject to errors that would not have occured if you used the compiler. Using rpm by hand when a package manager is available is like that. However there are no shortage of people who code in assembler. Some of them do so competently, but they still would not be the people I'd choose for developing my world-changing Microsoft-busting suite of software.
