I want to upgrade to the new version of TCL, but v8.3 isn't on the SuSE updates site. What do I do? I'm happy to go and get the source and compile it, but when I type "make install" it's going to overwrite some rather important files (like tclsh) which the rpm mechanism thinks it has control of. Is the standard procedure to remove the tcl.rpm before starting, and if so, what do I do if something breaks and I need the old version as well as the new one? -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Yes, I would remove the standard tcl.rpm before starting (either using YaST or rpm on the command line). If it does turn out that you need two versions on at once, you'll probably have to edit the Makefile to install to a different directory, although there may be a ./configure option that will allow you to set the install path. If you are compiling your own TCL, you risk breaking the later RPM updates you will do for it. This is because, SuSE uses different file locations than the standard "install" traget in the tarball. So, unless you are ready to tweak those setings in the Makefile or through "configure", I would recommend waiting... If it uses configure then just give it: --prefix-dir=/where/I/want/to/install/it This is great for testing new versions or when you must have new and old versions available at the same time. There are lots of other options to configure. Use: ./configure --help to get a list of them. rpm -e tcl # removes old RPM As far as having them run side-by-side, you'd need to configure the new Tcl to install itself to a new directory. I could understand if you're running 7.x and 8.x at the same time, but why would you need 8.x and 8.y running at the same time? -- -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | Atipa Linux Solutions -o) jpennington@atipa.com | Kansas City, MO /\\ 816-241-2641 x121 | http://www.atipa.com _\_V -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
