Please recommend UPS for SuSE 8.0 system

My UPS just died and I need a replacement. I don't think I want an exact replacement since I think the old one is under-spec'ed for my system. It was rated at only 185 watts (output) and I now have a 430 watt power supply in my system. Can anyone recommend a good replacement? -- Robert C. Paulsen, Jr. robert@paulsenonline.net

The smallest UPS we have is an APC Smart-UPS 1000, which works fine. We also have a number of Smart-UPS 2200s, which likewise works fine. Smart-UPS 1000 might be overkill for your setup, but APC in general seems to be the way to go. When connected to a SuSE box with the serial cable they can be easily monitored with the apcupsd package, that comes with SuSE. -- Best regards Christian Laursen

Looks like most of the APC systems advertise USB connection. Does this work on Linux? I do have USB connectors and have no problems with a USB mouse. -- Robert C. Paulsen, Jr. robert@paulsenonline.net

No they don't. Unfortunately our USB kernel module is not up to it yet. I got a 950W ups from Conext with serial I/O for $129. I'm just installing the daemon to monitor it. I'll let you know the result shortly. -- Steve _____________________________________________________________ HTML in e-mail is not safe. Looks like I might wrong about USB, at least apcupsd says it does support USB which I think is the optimum way to as far as ports goes. (I thought I got a reply from the USB list that it was not supported by the kernel yet. I do have some APC's at work so I will get one and verify the USB I/O.) The Conext comes with an apc cable 20C which is not a smart cable. This is bad as newer ups's tend to be smart. I guess the savings I made in dollars are visible with the simple I/O it seem to have. Their web site is not working too well. Timing out... I simulated power failure but did not get a message from apcupsd which seem to indicate poor communication between the two. Well, I can always return it if it won't fly and get an APC. More to come... -- Steve _____________________________________________________________ HTML in e-mail is not safe. Since my CyberPower was working OK (except that it didn't have enough capacity and then died on me), I went out and bought another CyberPower with a higher rating (model 900AVR rated at 500 watts). It seems to be working OK. At lest my system runs when plugged in to it and I get a warning message that it is running on battery power when I pull the plug. I am using the nut package (used to be called smartups). This treats it as a "generic" UPS and apparently doesn't support everything the supply is capable of since it comes with a Windows program that displays lots of info like battery level, voltage, etc.. Perhaps if I look around I'll find a way to take advantage of all its capabilities. -- Robert C. Paulsen, Jr. robert@paulsenonline.net

Can't you just replace the battery? or is the unit that old. I believe the battery of most APC systems can be replaced. At 08:34 AM 6/15/2002 -0500, you wrote:

Part of the problem is that the UPSD I have is not up to spec for my system. It only supported 185 Watts. I was trying to run a 430 Watt power supply and a couple of other things off of it. Perhaps this is what blew it out. -- Robert C. Paulsen, Jr. robert@paulsenonline.net
