Hi! I have a question. For my work, I sometimes need to work with Microsoft Word. I know there is OpenOffice that seems good but some functionality that I need are not present. Also I need Visio and a plugins to view QuickTime movies in a browser. I heard about CodeWeavers that produce CorssOver Office and CrossOver Plugin that seem to be the answer to my need. But, those products are not free... I can buy it but I would want to have some comments from people that tried it. How it works? Is it good? Does it works with a certain stability when you use the products in it? I have Suse Pro 8.0. Thanks

I've had no problems with it on SuSE 7.2, 8.0 and 8.1. I've not used the CrossOver Office pkg but what I have read on the mailing lists suggests it works quite well. And they are adding support weekly for new apps. The apps you mention above work quite well. I'd recommend downloading the demo's of these pkgs and giving them a whirl. But please understand that installing some programs isn't as easy as clicking on the .exe files in Konqueror. Codeweavers has their own install program which I've never had an issue with. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. I tell you what you should see.

I use CXoffice with Word & Excel both 97 & 2000 and have not had any really major problems. The main reason I use this product over OpenOffice is the ability to utilise a number of extensive macros with word & excel we have developed, all of which work without a problem with CXoffice. What I also like is the ability to cut & paste between linux apps and word & excel. The only limitation is that you cannot use the middle mouse button to paste into a MS application. I find Codeweavers really really support their product and put a lot of effort into resolving any bugs that do show up. Let me say that CXoffice is not perfect yet, but it is stable (a dam more stable than Win 98 would ever be) and quite usable. At present the help system in Word & Excel does not work, nor the Office Assistance (a blessing in disguise). Have a look at the following web page for more details of what works and what doesn't. http://www.codeweavers.com/products/office/supported_applications.php Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------

Am I correct in thinking that Crossover is ->not an Office alternative but a tweaked Wine that lets the real ->M$ Office work in Linux? There are 2 products that Codeweavers markets. The first is the CrossOver plugin pkg which is indeed a very tweeked version of wine with their installer for installing Windows browser plugins and software such as Quicktime. The second is CrossOver Office which lets you install Microsoft Office, Quicken and quite a few other Windows programs. Again this is also a tweeked version of wine with their installer and other such addons. Neither of these are simply wine, but wine + their addons. I have read that they are going to be merging these two products into one end all be all wine pkgs with many tools and addons for helping Win32 code work under Linux and I've also heard it will be working under FreeBSD as well. That's about the size of what I know. :) -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. I tell you what you should see.
Now, if they can manage to give it Directx functions, like the present version of wine has DX7 then games the developers that won't back port to Linux can be used. I am currently running Fallout Tactics without any problems so far, however Homeworld will finally load and run but at seconds per frame rather than frames per second - the deep space computation for the renders is the problem - big virtual areas. Anyway, I think this is very good news and would be willing to pay for a wine program that is truely comprehensive, providing it's priced reasonably. Cheers, Curtis. Not too likely, I don't think - Crossover is targeted specifically at desktop apps and work environments. And it's very good at what it does. I can heartily recommend it. To quote another poster - "I use CXoffice with Word & Excel both 97 & 2000 and have not had any really major problems." Please forgive me if I seem rude, I don't mean to, but the key phrase in that sentence is "Word & Excel both 97 & 2000"!!! , as in M$ Word 97/2000 and M$ Excel 97/2000. Now in all honesty if you know of another program named Excel that is not a product of M$ I am curious to hear about it. I can see perhaps another named Word (though I doubt it would survive long be the M$ legal sharks attack). Crossover is a subset of the WINE implimentation that allows M$ products, such as those mentioned previously, to run in a Unix environment with falling down and crashing to the ground hard. It answer the calls the programs ask/needs and there for the program has no conflict when trying to access resources, or in otherwords - It has no idea that it's not running in a Windows environment. This holds true for other programs base on Windows code as well. HTH, Curtis On Wednesday 06 November 2002 20:57, Damon Register wrote:

I run all of "office" if I need to, and recently visio as well as quicken and expensable. I could not live without this wonderful product! On Tue, 2002-11-05 at 16:11, Martin Richard wrote:
