Personally, if the process is so easy, I would prefer that they drop in the source tree, make the changes and compile it. THEN, release it. Since the 2.2 kernel is already out, and the process is so easy, how much longer would it take? Three or four hours, tops? Why make everyone else do that step? Who knows how many newbies and near-newbies mess it up, then generate a lot of complaints about SuSE, which I find to be an excellent example of German engineering. Dee,
According to www.suse.de/e/lx60/lx60.htm, SuSE 6.0 will be 2.2.0-compatible. All you need to do is drop in the source tree, make the appropriate changes, compile, and go.
Later,
Alan.

I'm sure the CDs are already burned...release date on website says 'end of January' so I guess we'll see shipping next week? Maybe they'll put a 2.2 Kernel RPM on the ftp site, for 6.0 users to download, that way with the 'readiness' of 2.2 all people would have to do is use rpm to upgrade. It's been strangely quiet on the S.u.S.E. front lately...( or so it seems to me..) -M - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

The CDs will not contain the 'final' 2.2 Kernel, it has been released too late. It'll need some more testing, before it will be the default. SuSE Linux 6.0 uses 2.0.36 as the default, you can alternatively install a 2.2-pre Kernel. The final 2.2 kernel is already on the ftp-Server. Uhm, thanks, I already have 2.2...but: Well, I for one, think that's a Good Thing it's being released NOT on 6.0. I think 2.2 ( as I said in another mail ) is bound to not be quite as stable as 2.0.36, and that an os should ship with a 'proven' kernel. There have been some bug reports on kernel, and some of the type of bug---'hey look what happens when I do this ---whoolah: system crash' vareity ...:-) I could see people having fits. I still think ( be this Linux or not --to whoever said that the post release patch stuff was a M$ thing and not a Linux thing ) that 2.2 will be better after the first bunch of patches come out and it's run for a while on allot of machines---hopefully dev boxes filing bug reports. -M - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

If that's all they do, I'll wait for all you guys to do the software testing and I'll wait for 6.1.
Why make everyone else do that step? Who knows how many newbies and near-newbies mess it up, then generate a lot of complaints about SuSE, which I find to be an excellent example of German engineering.
I'm betting if 6.0 ships in January, it'll be sans the 2.2 kernel. If it comes with 2.2, I hope they delay (I know - it's a MS phrase) shipment until testing is complete. Better to ship a product that works than get the bad press, IMHO.

The masters are already in the factory. They were shipped before 2.2.0 was released (newest version on the CDs is 2.2.0-pre7). Dropping in the latest kernel without further testing would not be a good idea. There are still some known problems (heard about that "everybody can crash the machine bug"?; also ISDN needs additional work). In order to have a kernel that works for anyone, we will need some 2.2.x, where x is some number != 0. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>
