Has anyone picked up any anti-virus scanners for SuSE that are "Free"? The only one I can find is clamav, but it's not something that comes from the SuSE mirrors.

Also, try f-prot. Free but is command line only. Not real difficult to set up for auto update and auto run. ra

I've been using f-prot as well and it works very well from the command-line. There is a provided perl script for doing the updates, that I simply scheduled with cron and I also scheduled a complete scan to run during the night. They have commercial software that handle the other functions such as scanning email, or Samba servers. I liked it so well, that I purchased it for the windows machines here at home. Their price is reasonable for the purchased stuff and the fact that they support Linux just made the decision so easy. -- Kelly L. Fulks Home Account near Huntsville, AL

SuSE 8.2 has it on cd4; use YAST to install it then in a shell CD to /usr/lib/AntiVir and enter "antivir --update" and it will go on the web and get the newest virus definition files from H+BDEV. Other than that I am learning it too. All sugestions for parameters and operation gladly accepted! It works fine, although I no longer use it. You need to be root, or su, to update but any user can antivir --update --check to see if new virus signatures are available. Be aware that if you use postfix + antivir and a virus is detected it will send an alert to the sender with a return address of virusalert@domain and a warning to root/postmaster. I wasn't keen on this warning to sender so disabled it, can't remember where as it's been a while since last used. As long as root gets the warning root can decide if the alert to sender is needed. YMMV, HTH -- del suse-linux-e

To all concerned:
Bad News is that over the last three days I have rec. Windows viruses that were file.exe and are about 100K. Each one comes looking like Microsoft sent them (not true). All links were back to Microsoft. I downloaded for a sure test AntiVirus Workstation today and AntiVirus missed all 6 of them. they are the Swen Virus (or at least that what I have heard). With Linux I have had no virus problems so I have saved about 10 to 15 MS viruses. It found all of the old ones but not the latest (6) ones -- 73 de Donn Washburn __ " http://www.hal-pc.org/~n5xwb " Ham Callsign N5XWB / / __ __ __ __ __ __ __ 307 Savoy St. / /__ / / / \/ / / /_/ / \ \/ / Sugar Land, TX 77478 /_____/ /_/ /_/\__/ /_____/ /_/\_\ LL# 1.281.242.3256 a MSDOS Virus "Free Zone" OS Email: n5xwb@hal-pc.org Info: http://www.knoppix.net

clamav will stop them, as that's what we use. Don't be scared of clamav not being on the suse mirrors. It still works great. Dee

Simply reject or dump them via postfix. Reject any email containing a dos/windows executable - even if somebody in your net is using windows :-) -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

I use f-prot (http://www.f-prot.com/products/home_use/linux/), which is free for home use and has updates available online (I run the update as a daily cron job). In the course of checking this info, I noticed that there was a new version of F-Prot available and downloaded and installed it. However, the check-updates script has been replaced with a perl script that doesn't work here - it needs a "HTTP::Request" module but I can't find this using YaST. Does anyone know where this might be? Just read the http://www.frisk.is website, and was a little taken back by their description of the software. What I gather, this software filters it by directing the email through different virus filters around the net, not on your own computer. I wonder if thats true, or if thats their interpretation of obtaining filter data from the net?

Yes, the descriptions says (translated): <begin translation> f-prot is based on a group of filtering machines which are placed at different places arount the net. This way it is ensured, that the filtering does not stop even if one link in the chain is broken. <end translation> It's only a fraction, but I wonder if this is true. Weather this software actually sends the mail through a chain of filtering machines around the net?

F-Prot runs locally - it's a normal linux program. Perhaps they're talking about some other service that does remote virus checking based on using F-Prot on servers (like McAfee's VirusScan Online)? You should try CPAN - http://search.cpan.org This is where ALL Perl modules live. -- Dave

This is true but HTTP::Request is part of the LWP bundle that is available as perl-libwww-perl in yast. Cheers, Dave

Yes, I guess that's true. I've just been using CPAN for so long that that's where I always look. My latest Perl project involved so many Perl modules not found in YAST for example, Net::SSH:Perl requires about 30 subsidiary modules that aren't in YAST. To be honest, I always use CPAN as well but the OP was asking about yast and that's probably easier if he's not a Perl hacker but just somebody trying to use f-prot. OTOH, for anybody is a Perl hacker, get thee over to CPAN and never use anything else :) Cheers, Dave

Thanks,
John, sounds like you need to check into the CPAN thing and grab some perl modules. I seem to remember running into that early on when I was getting perl installed. Cant remember all I did. Oldheimers you know. I would look into the perl website and they will get you up and running. Richard
There is the virus scan included with the suse distro. It's listed directly under samba in the package selection screen. I don't remember the exact name. Just do a search. Tom Allison wrote:

Is this the version of FProt which allows scanning of the other partitions. I multiboot both boxes and would prefer on boot to mount and scan each of the other systems partitions.
