[SuSE Linux] Html Editor under SuseLinux
I am looking for a html editor for Linux and and did not find one in the 5.3 Suse distribution. I looked around and found Amaya but it uses Motif. Other tools like Dozer are outdated. If I look for Suites I can found StarOffice but I cannot speend 6 hours downloading it only for a html editor. Does any body has a solution ? Thanks. I have read however that Netscape writes 'bad' html which does not display correctly in all browsers. I have up to now used a text editor and tried to write html to 3.2 standards as set out in 'Instant HTML' published by Wrox Press. I was quite surprised recently when I tried viewing one of my pages containing tables in IE to find it did not display correctly although it did display OK in Netscape and SO. I was using a friends machine to set up a website for him, had written the pages on my linux system and sneaker-netted them to his system running windross95. This was the first time ever that I had used IE. Since it is important for him, and his business, that people using IE can see his pages correctly I am concerned that the editor I use writes 'correct' html. Obviously what I had thought to be correct, isn't so far as IE is concerned. So can anyone confirm whether or not Netscape's output conforms to html standards and what about StarOffice? - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>

I'm not an html guru, but I have found that pages written in composer come out quite well in Netcape & IE. Though, older browsers & others like Opera / Hotjava do not work well with pages from composer. Composer is the best free wysiwyg editor imo.

Imho, IE has a really bad tables implementation, it's hard trying to get IE to read tables right.

Slow isn't it?

'Correct' html as far as IE is concerned, is html the way MS wants it.

Just another note on composer. I found that tables made in Composer for windows could not be read in Composer for Linux. Perhaps Composer for Linux is a lesser implementation that the one for Windows. wrote:

Was that a MS inspired document? :)

Consider this: Who made the first graphical browser? Bill Gates or Marc Andreesen? I would put my money with Marc and stick with Netscape.

One big problem I've encountered is with IE's non-support of the javascript "standard." The other big problems I've encountered was IE losing connectivity to web sites. Minor problems include text not being displayed in the same font size as it was designed. I look at my sites using both, and develop to the worst case. I find out that the best way to get the layout that I want is writing down by hand HTML tags. In this way I can be sure that I respect the standard HTML. Nevertheless there are some nice and useful "new tags" introduced by Netscape and/or Microsoft. Keep in mind that their browser are a bit further than the standard html. AsWedit is quite good wysiwyg html editor, and let you play with forms which is not possible under Netscape Composer (at least in the version I have 4.05). There is an rpm at the RedHat site which works on SuSE5.3 You can write your page with it . AsWedit uses Netscape to show the preview (but you can choose among other unix browser), so that is a good habit to test your page with IE, too.
