Brute force I'm afraid.
rpm -qa | grep kde
then copied and pasted all the 2.x packages onto an rpm -e command. Some
of these produced dependency errors so I did rpm -e on those packages
stated in the error messages.
It took ages, but as I said before, it worked. Plus it cleared out a load
of other rubbish and got me back some disk space as well.
It might be better to try Crazy Diamond's approach first and see if that
works.

Had a Devil of a problem with my 6.4 box this weekend upgrading to KDE2.1.1.with exactly the same problem as you. Eventually solved it by manually uninstalling all kde2.x packages and reinstalling 2.1.1 from stratch. Took ages but it worked.
