Create a Jabber room/group for suse help
Hello, I'd like to experiment some in the use of jabber clients and servers. TO give it some purpose I propose creating a room/group called "suse" so some discussion on suse help issues can be discussed online. I'm using the gaim client, registered at jabber.org and created a room/group called "suse". If there are users of jabber clients online, can you try to enter this room and join me? I have some questions about jabber itself. -- Rafael
Hello, Bad timing to make the proposal, haven't been online very frequently last couple of days. For those of you still interested, I'm in the "suse" group chat at the server conference.jabber.org. My nickname is "raffo". For those not familiar with jabber, http://jabber.org/ contains info on this service. In short, it is an "instant messanger"-like service. Some of the features I like are that you are not bound to some company's server, you can set up your own; the other is presence notification, your client will notify you when some particular user becomes online. As for the group chat "suse", instruct your client to join this group chat. I don't think you need any permission to access it. Currently I'm using the "gabber" client, a GNOME package, I compiled it from sources, since there is no suse package. You may be able to get other clients from the web site. I'll be online for some time tonight. Rafael
This is really nice! I stopped by tonight, and it was nice to be able to chat with fellow SuSE'ers on Jabber. :-) -Tim -- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. I'm using everybuddy, tried to join suse group on jabber.org with no success at all. I have no problem to access AIM with everybuddy. Jabber recommends everybuddy as a client. So what's up? On Sat, Jul 21, 2001 at 12:36:05AM -0500, Timothy R.Butler wrote:

Actually Kit isn't compatible with Jabber, it's an AIM client. So you will want a Jabber client. I recommend Gaim, although you will want the new version rather than the older version bundled with 7.1 (just go to gaim.sf.net and download the RPM they have there). Gaim will handle all of your instant messagining needs including AOL Instant Messanger, Yahoo Messanger, MSN Messanger, ICQ, Jabber, and IRC Chat. -Tim -- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. Can the current version of Gaim (0.11.0pre14) actually connect to Jabber?
Every time I try to signon to Jabber using Gaim it seg faults on me.

Hi Avi,
Can the current version of Gaim (0.11.0pre14) actually connect to Jabber? Every time I try to signon to Jabber using Gaim it seg faults on me.
Hmm... I'm not sure, I'm using the CVS version (which fixes some MSN connection problems). Which jabber server are you using? -Tim -- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. This has got me interested and I have a question. I've been using Gaim for a while and I didn't know I could connect to other accounts as well. How does that work? I have an ICQ account I would like to set up with Gaim if it's possible and then I would like to find out more about jabber. I tried reading up on it on the web but www.jabber.com keeps giving me an error. I hate being the only linux user in my community. -- David M. AIM: dmcglone27 ICQ: 96210352

Just go to Tools > Plugins, and then "Load" from there select the plugins you want (there are three listings for each plugin - select the SHORTEST one for each). I use all of them except Zepher and Napster, and they work well (I do recommend using the CVS if you want MSN support though - Microsoft changed their system, and you need at least pre14 - the current release - to get AIM to work). In order to connect to other IM services besides AIM, you have to select
the plugin entry and then select the appropriate library. You will find
plugins for yahoo, icq, jabber, msn and even irc.

Hi, Rafael, Out of curiosity, since I've not had/probably won't have much use for IM, I dl'ed Gabber (rpm) from Gnome, installed using Yast, and am apparently now the only person in the SuSE room! How many of us are using this at the moment- because we'll need quite a few to ensure that there is likely to be some one on-line when we log in. This is Sunday 220701 at 11.47GMT Terence

So far only a few people has been to the chat group. There is no continuous presence. What I think this would be most useful is when after someone posts a problem here, someone or more can walk him through the solution online. I've seen recently several cases in which people continue having a problem despite of instructions on how to solve them. Personaly, I don't see this as a place to just talk, you can do that with irc, and irc always bores me. Raf.

Yes, I agree. It will be interesting to see if it works. Perhaps those who feel they can assist could post to this list saying "I will be on SuSE.jabber.org between 1800 & 2000 GMT today". Then those who have a query will be able to contact them direct. Terence
I popped in 3 times to find 1 idle person there..and after all I have ICQ and Everybuddy (AIM) open..along with IRC..heheh..another IM is a bit of overkill without anyone being there. How's about everyone join irc.openprojects.net and go to #suse. You can use xchat, BitchX, ircII..whatever you like. Very nice way to talk. :) * Terence McCarthy (saki@cwcom.net) [010722 04:19]: ->On Friday 20 July 2001 22:32, Rafael Herrera wrote: -> ->> Currently I'm using the "gabber" client, a GNOME package, I compiled it ->> from sources, since there is no suse package. Well, two guys joined the group tonight, worked well. Let's see if this picks up. My idea is for those of you having a difficulty (but still able to get access to the internet) get some assistance online from someone in the list that happens to know the answer. Also, to post the results back here so the information is not lost and gets archived for future reference. As of now I don't know how a jabber session can be archived in a public place, I know it gets saved locally, my gabber client saves the transcripts locally (by default, it seems) and will display the transcripts through netscape when pressing on one of the icons in the top bar.
