SuSE 9.0: boot problems after YOU online update
Dear reader! Using the online update support YOU I updated SuSE 9.0 (after update now 2.4.21-260) because of previous ALSA problems with the shipped kernel (2.4.21-99). Now, all applications I use run fine. However, after that update I have problems during the boot sequence, and this problem occurs not during every boot. That is, 2 out of 3 times the boot is not completely successful. After some error messages (see as appended later) it is not going to runlevel 5 but falls back to runlevel 3. Under runlevel 3 then I can't start the x-server. (However, booting Linux with Failsafe, "startx" is working.) REMARK: Serveral boots has shown, that the error messages in "boot.msg" are varying from boot to boot. If wished, I can send by e-mail two complete boot.msg after two faulty boot. If anybody knows this problem and/or has a solution, I would appreciate it. Furthermore, if somebody could tell me the differences between the Linux default boot and the Failsafe boot, I would be glad. (Or are the differences just the boot options?) Now an excerpt of the /var/log/boot.msg after running into boot problems (I marked the possible faulty places with an <-------------fault? ): [...snip...] Setting up the CMOS clock done <notice>exit status of (boot.idedma boot.clock) is (0 0) <notice>run boot scripts (boot.quota) <notice>exit status of (boot.quota) is (0) <notice>run boot scripts (boot.ldconfig) Setting up timezone datadone <notice>exit status of (boot.ldconfig) is (0) <notice>run boot scripts (boot.sched boot.localnet boot.isapnp) Setting scheduling timeslices unused Setting up hostname 'sparrow'done Setting up loopback interface done find: /tmp/ssh-*: No such file or directory <-------------fault? <notice>exit status of (boot.sched boot.localnet boot.isapnp) is (6 0 0) <notice>run boot scripts (boot.klog boot.ipconfig) Enabling syn flood protectiondone Disabling IP forwardingdone Creating /var/log/boot.msg /etc/init.d/boot.d/S12boot.klog: line 67: 708 Segmentation fault /bin/sleep 1 <-------------fault? done<notice>killproc: kill(28,29) System Boot Control: The system has been setup Skipped features: boot.sched System Boot Control: Running /etc/init.d/boot.local done<notice>exit status of (boot.klog boot.ipconfig) is (0 0) <notice>killproc: kill(28,3) <-------------fault?
