I figured it was time I started doing what the entire world is doing and began listening to music through my PC. I've always used a minidisc player up till now. So last night I tried to figure out how to create music files on my machine. I found a utility on my SuSE-6.3 system called cdda2wav, which created a .wav file from a track on an audio CD. I played it, and it was OK. Then I checked the filesize of the wav. Half a gigabyte. Hmmm. So that's the advantage of MP3s - they compress down. So I tried to find something that would convert me a wav to an mp3. No luck there. Can someone spell out for me the correct way of creating an MP3 file from a CD using Linux? Is there a HOWTO or a website with the required utilities somewhere? -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

2) Encode your wave files with an encoder such as bladeenc or mp3encode or whatever... (music.wav --> music.mp3)
Thanks, I'll try it at home tonight. Someone here at the office says that my Minidisc player actually records music in MP3 format, and if I have a sound card with optical output, I could record the MP3 files straight from computer to Minidisc. Is this true, and if so, what software do I need to record onto my Minidisc? -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
Two suggestions: - ripit.pl: On the SuSE CD's. Works from command line, may require moderate hacking to suit your taste. - grip: GTK+ ripper/encoder front end. I got mine from Helix GNOME. Works great, especailly with the gogo encoder. On Tue, 04 Jul 2000, you wrote:
