[SLE] Any UK users of NTL?
[This message is only relevant to SuSErs in the UK, although everyone else is allowed to sit and watch!] I am thinking of changing my phone from BT to NTL. The option of unlimited free Internet access is too tempting. My question is this: Has anyone managed to connect to NTL using wvdial or PPP and, if so, what settings were used? Any help would be appreciated. The free connection thing has yet to be proven. I've used NTL's 1p-per-minute-at-anytime connection service for several months now, and it's excellent: great throughput, never engaged once, Linux friendly (if not exactly supported). I registered for the free phone call service and have yet to receive the CD. I chased them up and they have 500,000 CDs to send out, and are managing a rate of 5,000 a week. That can't be right - or at least I hope it's not! When it arrives I'll see how it performs. If they've put the right number of servers in, based on my previous experience with their service, it should be OK. But don't change your ISP yet! :-)

Yes, using Kppp. It was so trivial I did it, then forgot about it. If you can't make it work I could send you a config file. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Yes, I have connected to ntlworld using wvdial. NTL sent me a cdrom. It seems that you can't setup an account without using the cd. The CD is for MS Windows 95/98, though. The CD comes with a PIN number and a serial number ( i think only the serial number is unique to a particular customer), and i had to type in our customer number from our bill. These have to be typed in during an online registration process. The installation software initiates a toll free call and then you go through the process of creating a username etc. I had a problem with the installation process. It asked me to choose a primary dial up number from a non-existant list. I tried reinstalling a number of times but to no avail. I then thought that i could look at their website and find the dial up number (my username had already been created by this stage). But this didn't work since ntl didn't have the free ntlworld number on their site. Anyway, I tried installing their software onto a different windows computer (which has very little software on) and it worked straight off. So I managed to get the dial up number from that and set up wvdial on my suse 6.2 computer using yast (systems administration -- network -- configure a ppp network). The phone number for ntlworld access is 0800 5190100. Set to automatic dns and PAP/CHAP. The service is good. It seems quite fast. On a couple of times though, Sunday evening for example, I have had to try a few times to connect but it usually seems to work very well. I think they are struggling with their technical support email though - the first day i got the cd and couldn't get it to work i emailed help@ntlworld.com asking for the free dial up number and it took them 13 days to reply! There seems to be a bit of a waiting list -friends of mine who initially phoned up to request a cdrom only the day after i did are still to receive their cdroms.
