Evolution with local mailbox
I have finally gotten around to working on my spamassassin/fetchmail/sendmail setup. Everything seems to be working. Except for one thing: after having Evolution work with my POP accounts directly for a while, it now won't pick up the mail in /var/spool/mail/hans - when I click on "Send/Receive" there's a quick flash which look like it might be a progressbar (although much smaller than the usual send/receive one) or error of some sort, but it's much to fast to see. I have tried setting it to "standard unix mailbox" - then it makes a virtual folder with an extra inbox and trash, but it still doesn't delete the mail from my local mailbox, even if I move it out of the evolution folder. This doesn't seem to be a proble in kmail though. I point it to the directory and it downloads the mail and deletes it from my local dir. Why does Evolution not want to work with my local mail system? I'm using 1.4-ulb Thanks Hans

I have a similar setup and the Server Type setting is 'Local delivery' Works 100% for me. HTH -- Andre Truter Software Engineer Registered Linux user #185282 ICQ #40935899 AIM: trusoftzaf http://www.trusoft.za.net ~ A dinosaur is a salamander designed to Mil Spec ~

OK, this is now VERY wierd. My Evolution that has been reading my system mail box (/var/mail/spool/andre) for 2 years, have suddenly stopped reading it. I have the same symptoms that Hans is having. The funny thing is that I did not make any changes. The one moment it was working and the next it stopped working.. I cleared my system mail box, but it still has no effect.... Anybody else experiencing a similar thing? -- Andre Truter Software Engineer Registered Linux user #185282 ICQ #40935899 AIM: trusoftzaf http://www.trusoft.za.net ~ A dinosaur is a salamander designed to Mil Spec ~

Which versions of Evolution and SuSE are you using? H

I searched the evolution mailing list and found that it is known bug since Evolution 1.3. The fix did not make it to 1.4. http://bugzilla.ximian.com/show_bug.cgi?id=43974 THey give a manual workaround, but it did not work for me. :-( The reason why my evolution suddenly stopped working, is that when i replied to your mail originally, i opened my settings to check it and when I closed it, it updated the gconf file and introduced the error. ....

THey give a manual workaround, but it did not work for me. :-( Oh great, so at least it will hopefully work in the next release. Thanks for the link - didn't work for me either.
I had for long had been contemplating switching to kmail, but with this release of Evolution I was won over completely. Now this. I guess I'll have to be patient then... Alternative solution. Since I am running sendmail on my machine, couldn't I treat my local mailbox like a pop account? I'm sure I remember having something similar going on a old redhat machine, but can't get it going here: "Could not connect to POP server 192.168.1.31 (port 110)." Is there something obvious I'm missing? Thanks Hans

I finally got it to work! In the %gconf.xml file that they say you should edit, make sure the entry where '/var/spool/mail/<username>' says 'spool' and not 'mbox' Eg.: in my case it was: mbox:/var/spool/mail/andre and I changed it to : spool:/var/spool/mail/andre Then it worked. Great! I'll give it a shot as soon as I'm offline and report back later tonight. Thanks! HAns

No go. It still tells me it's completed mail retrieval, but nothing actually happened. Guess I'll either have to do the import thing or wait for the next version! Thanks Hans

OK, I reinstalled the rpm, ran SuSEconfig, and cleared out my /tmp directory, all to no avail. I've verified that kmail can get the mail from my local mailbox, and also that other users can get it with kmail but not with Evolution. So it's definitely an evolution problem. I also managed to see the progress bar for send/receive (by sending myself a mail with a rediculously huge attachment). It merely says: Path: /var/spool/mail/hans, Type: mbox Complete I know for a fact there's mail there waiting for me, but Evolution disagrees. Any ideas what is causing this behaviour? Thanks Hans
