Updated kernel on SuSE 9.1 has broken e1000 driver.
On one of my server which is running SuSE 9.1 now has a problem where the network card (Intel Pro 1000/MT) keeps locking up especially under heavy load. I got these error messages: e1000: eth0: e1000_watchdog: NIC Link is Up 100 Mbps Full Duplex NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out e1000: eth0: e1000_watchdog: NIC Link is Up 100 Mbps Full Duplex NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out e1000: eth0: e1000_watchdog: NIC Link is Up 100 Mbps Full Duplex NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out e1000: eth0: e1000_watchdog: NIC Link is Up 100 Mbps Full Duplex NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out e1000: eth0: e1000_watchdog: NIC Link is Up 100 Mbps Full Duplex NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out e1000: eth0: e1000_watchdog: NIC Link is Up 100 Mbps Full Duplex NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out e1000: eth0: e1000_watchdog: NIC Link is Up 100 Mbps Full Duplex NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out e1000: eth0: e1000_watchdog: NIC Link is Up 100 Mbps Full Duplex NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out e1000: eth0: e1000_watchdog: NIC Link is Up 100 Mbps Full Duplex I noticed that this problem started to occur after I installed the latest kernel updates over the weekend: pro:~ # uname -a Linux pro 2.6.5-7.193-default #1 Wed Jul 20 14:39:18 UTC 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux pro:~ # It appears in this kernel, SuSE introduced a new e1000 driver. The previous version was (based on syslog): kernel: Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Driver - version 5.2.39 kernel: Copyright (c) 1999-2004 Intel Corporation. The new one is: ecslproxy kernel: Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Driver - version 6.0.52-NAPI ecslproxy kernel: Copyright (c) 1999-2005 Intel Corporation. Oh well. Now either I will need to downgrade the kernel, or install independent e1000 driver from Intel, all because someone as SuSE screwed up the driver.
