I am trying to get filezilla to open up my website, but I can't and I think it is because of my firewall. Can anyone tell me, do I allow certain services in the "external zone" and in the "demilitarized zone" in order to get it to connect? filezilla doesn't give me any technical information as to why it doesn't connect - it just says it cannot read the file structure on my site. What services does filezilla use? Thanks, George -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks, George can you use just ftp://ipaddress to see if you can at least connect?
I have all my services under the external zone. Also, are you using apparmour? That may be an issue. Thanks, yes, I verified that I can connect, so the problem is on my side, not the server side. Is it safe to allow all my services under the external zone? I thought about doing that but I assumed that would open my pc to all kinds of probing robots on the internet. Where is the ftp server log file? Do you mean on the ftp server? I know that it is trying to connect, because I get connection, but it won't read the file list. Will the ftp server log file give me some extra information? I also spent some time with the tech support of my hosting company and they could not reproduce the problem on their end. Well, I was able to try the FTP add on for firefox and transfer my files using that instead. Don't know why filezilla didn't work, but I don't need it anymore. I don't need to make a ton of transfers, just every once in a while. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good FTP program? the add on to firefox seems to work ok, but I would like other options. Makes sense to me that it wouldn't be selected by default - not everyone writes code, so a compiler for those users would be just taking up disk space. It is in the devel pattern.
call me old fashion, but for me, an operating system should at least have a shell, a compiler and a software like make.
Made sense to me only before distros started defaulting to runlevel 5. Since then most users don't ever compile anything, and for many who might, there's the openSUSE buildservice alternative.

Not "just" space. There's also more bandwidth every time it gets updated, and longer waits for updates to complete. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Yes, I definitely like the description, "the world's best Swiss Army Knife: Midnight Commander"......
The tragic part is that it is now not installed by default, as it used to be in the past, when installing oS :-( .
True, but at least it's in the Console Tools pattern.
IIRC, it's missing from most live Linux media, and a reason why the only live Linux media I ever boot is Knoppix.
I install my openSUSE from DVDs and not off Live CDs (one exception was oS 11.4 with Gnome 3 downloaded from the Gnome site).
And yes, it is available for installation if you search for it and select it for installation (the same goes for nano for that matter) but it is no longer installed by default
Even GCC seems not be installed by default. I installed a fresh installation of openSUSE 11.4 on my virtual machine, booted it, logged in and tried to compile Linux 2.6.39-rc7 (was the recent release to that time).
I thought openSUSE won´t be like Ubuntu and delivered gcc and make by default. No way. I had have to install gcc and make on my own :/
call me old fashion, but for me, an operating system should at least have a shell, a compiler and a software like make.

You are correct: 'gcc', 'make', 'mc' are no longer installed by default. I compile the nVidia drivers from the nVidia site myself and therefore have to install 'gcc' and 'make' as well as the mandatory 'kernel-source'. OK, the last is not something which needs to be installed as a default but the other two, including 'mc'?......
We are all doomed, I tell you, all doomed :'( ........

Thanks, George can you use just ftp://ipaddress to see if you can at least connect?
I have all my services under the external zone.
Also, are you using apparmour? That may be an issue.
Is there anything in your ftp server log file saying a connection is even being tried?
This is the sequence fileZilla goes through when I try to connect: Command: PWD Response: 211-Features: Response: MDTM Response: MFMT Response: TVFS Response: MFF modify;UNIX.group;UNIX.mode; Response: MLST modify*;perm*;size*;type*;unique*;UNIX.group*;UNIX.mode*;UNIX.owner*; Response: SITE MKDIR Response: SITE RMDIR Response: SITE UTIME Response: SITE SYMLINK Response: REST STREAM Response: SIZE Response: 211 End Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing Response: 257 "/" is the current directory So it remains connected, but I can't do anything because it does not retrieve the directory listing.
