[S.u.S.E. Linux] 32-bit FAT, repartitioning and LILO, different Questions
Hello, a few friends want to install Linux. They use '95 with the new 32 bit FAT. first:Is there a chance to repartitionate these FATs? And how? (fips or something similar. I've got no experience with that) econd: can I use LILO in the boot record? is there a difference with booting linux and the according lilo.conf entrys? Anything else to think of in that constellation? (apart from rm -r * on these partitions; they did not like that suggestion of mine ;-)) Jürgen -- ========================================== __ _ Jürgen Braukmann e-mail: brauki@cww.de | / / (_)__ __ ____ __ Tel: 0201-743648 dk4jb@db0qs.#nrw.deu.eu | / /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ========================================== /____/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Get Partition Magic. It's worth the $60-80 you pay, you will do in 30 minutes what takes EXPERTS a couple of days to do. And you will do it again. And again. $60-80 is nothing, trust me (and I don't even have an income!) It supports ext2fs and FAT32. I'll defer the other questions. I like your rm -Rf * suggestion though! :) --- jonathan@aracnet.net <A HREF="http://members.xoom.com/JMarkevich"><A HREF="http://members.xoom.com/JMarkevich</A">http://members.xoom.com/JMarkevich</A</A>> Innovation is hard to schedule. -- Dan Fylstra -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
Hi I am sure that Partition Magic ver.3.0 is worth every penny or cent like you say, but why pay 60/80$ when fips is free and in my experience works perfectly ( with one exception that I don't understand:- under M$95B on 1Gb HD it said I had approx 450 mb used and 575 free, after I used fips the max partition I could get for linux was 301Mb. Why? ). Anyway at the very least i'd have thought it worth trying ;-). goto <A HREF="http://bmrc.berkeley.edu/people/chaffee/fat32.html"><A HREF="http://bmrc.berkeley.edu/people/chaffee/fat32.html</A">http://bmrc.berkeley.edu/people/chaffee/fat32.html</A</A>>. As a newbie can somebody tell me the linux kernel version nº that first supported M$fat32?. jonathan@aracnet.net escribió:

The main advantage of Partition Magic is it can change the size of a partition without having to move or restore the software. So, on the typical Win95 box that has one 3GB drive where you want to install Linux but keep Win95 and dual boot with lilo, first you delete or uninstall all the garbage software that was preinstalled by the manufacturer and get down to the stuff you might actually use--suppose that leaves you a Win95 requirement of 500MB. You can now go into Partition Magic right from Win95 and pare down the Win95 partition from 3GB to 500MB without even rebooting your box. At this point, I do not recommend you create any partitions for Linux as this is safest done by Linux fdisk in the installer of your Linux distribution. Just leave empty space for now. Another neat thing about Partition Magic when repartitioning Win95 boxes is it can reclaim 100s of MBs of disk space by making the cluster sizes smaller--something else fips can't do. Partition Magic is well worth the money--very easy and slick to use for a grubby job that is potentially fatal to your data. I always set inode density when I partition for Linux...

If one is not made of money just let Linux take care of all this for free without having to learn yet again another Windows helper package.

There is no Linux utility that will make the cluster size smaller on a DOS or WIN95 partition and reclaim the space. Partition Magic is the only game in town. Dwight -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
actually, you should usr PQM to create the partitions (fat is fine) and then use Linux fdisk to mark them as Linux partitions. If you use linux fdisk to create partitions then eventually PQM will refuse to deal with the disk because the DOS and linux partition numbering schemes are different: DOS numbers them in their physical order, but linux orders them in order of creation! yours, Andy -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

This is an extremely important caveat. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Dwight -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

I have successfully used a product called Partition Magic to reduce FAT32 partition size to make room for Linux. It works with most file systems on the x86 platform besides fat/fat32. For safe measure, also run scandisk and defrag on the Fat32 partition after reducing it's size (boot in DOS prompt mode for scandisk). I have experienced some strange behavior in Win95 environment that went away after scandisk/defrag on the FAT partitions. section for the DOS (Win95) partition in your /etc/lilo.conf. It does not matter whether the DOS partition is FAT or FAT32. HTH Good luck.
