My Linux box crashes.....
Hi all, I have a P-II 350Mhz PC with 256MB ram currently running SuSE 7.2 and Samba. It is the file sharing server for a network of 5 Win9X PCs. Some users have saved on their home-directories some .mpg files for their personal usage (which is ok with me as they are small). However, whenever a user tries to view one of these files, the Unix PC after a few seconds crashes and the only way to bring the system back on-line is to hard-boot it (switch off and on again). I have looked at the /var/log/messages file but I see no messages regarding this issue. I have also runned fsck on the hard-drive and there are no errors found. The Network card is an Rtl-8139 which I have configured through YAST and it appears to be ok and everything else is functioning perfectly. The Linux Box is also the internet firewall and router between the internet and the network (the ISDN on the linux is being shared by all other PCs on the network). Can someone tell me of some diagnostics that I can run to see what could possibly be the reason of these crashes?? Thanx friends. Chris

Which Unix PC? I thought it was Linux and Windows? -- _____________________________________ John Andersen
Sorry my mistake. Unix should read Linux.
Thanx John.

When ever they try to view ANY of them? If so, then its not likely a storage problem. View via Samba I'm guessing?, not a web page. (trying to eliminate apache as the culpret)... Any problem just copying the files off the server? Does that crash as well? When it crashes does it have blinking keyboard lights (kernel panic)?

Off hand I'd suspect some network component, either the nic or the first hub/switch it hits. Nics are cheap, I'd try swapping that first. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

They have complained about the mpg files so far. the other files that they use from Word and/or excell are small and they haven't caused any crashes so far. I think that it is the constant streaming that causes the problem.... Then again, I am not sure what it is.

Yes via Samba to avoid any complexities with Apache.

Nope! No blinking lights and no Kernel panics. Copying is not the problem. Viewing seems to be the problem so far.

Tell you the truth John that was my first clue... I will purchase a new one (probably a 3Comm to be on the safe side) and see what happens. Also, I have noticed that although the NIC is a 10/100 Ethernet and the hub is 10/100, while copying to the server, the users never get above 3 or 4 Mbits.... Chances are that the network card is down. Will try to change it and let you know if the problem persists.... Thank you! Chris

Whenever I have had such problems, 99% of the time it is due to bad memory. I suggest before you go buying new hardware, run the memtest program (boot from CD1, and select the memory test option) and let it run for a few hours. If your system passes this test, I suggest you next run a surface check of your hard disk (e2fsk -c) Tony
