Reverting kernel from 2.4.2 to 2.4.0
How do I revert the kernel from 2.4.2 to 2.4.0? I can't find anything in the original 7.1 distribution corresponding to k_deflt_24_-2.4.2-4.i386.rpm, so if I remove that rpm (using the rpm program or Yast), it looks as though I'll be left with many missing system components. (I want to try reverting the kernel because I couldn't get the 8139too ethernet driver to work under 2.4.2, even though it worked under 2.4.0.) Also, if I revert the kernel, do I also need to revert modutils, or will the newer modutils work with the older kernel? Paul Abrahams

You should remove k_deflt using RPM on the command line "rpm -e k_deflt". Do not reboot at this stage! Now mount CD1 and run "rpm -Uhv /cdrom/suse/images/k_deflt.rpm" Now run "mk_initrd ; lilo" afterwards.

They should work with the older kernel as well. Bye, LenZ -- ------------------------------------------------------------------ Lenz Grimmer SuSE GmbH mailto:grimmer@suse.de Schanzaeckerstr. 10 http://www.suse.de/~grimmer/ 90443 Nuernberg, Germany One who is always in a stew generally goes to pot.

Thanks, Lenz. Could I persuade you to have my question and its answer included in the SuSE support database? I may not be the only person who needs this information. Paul

They don't seem to. I got a bunch of error messages when I reverted the kernel without reverting modutils and rebooted. When I reverted modutils and rebooted again, the error messages went away. Paul Abrahams

Not quite: k_deflt would be the 2.2.x kernel (can be installed in parallel to a 2.4.x kernel); use k_deflt_24 instead... Bye, Martin

Indeed. Thanks for correcting me :) LenZ -- ------------------------------------------------------------------ Lenz Grimmer SuSE GmbH mailto:grimmer@suse.de Schanzaeckerstr. 10 http://www.suse.de/~grimmer/ 90443 Nuernberg, Germany The only roses without thorns are love and friendship.
