RE: [SLE] setting up a dial up proxy
sounds like a reasonable group project. I imagine you can use anythign to establishthe ppp connection. there are a few ways I think. It woulnd' be too difficult to setup a script that users can use to initialize the the dial up. after that it would be ip chains, and the appropriate proxy software. do you know if wvdial allows a dial on demand. ei. if iexplorer on another machine request the proxy it will initnialize the ppp connection Rowan [TSS] Gerber Scientific Products http://www.gspinc.com

I'm doing the same thing Rowan plus setting up a news server. It looks to me like we should be able to use wvdial as per the manual to establish the ppp connection but I'm having trouble getting it to run ppp - disconnects saying ppp failure. Anyway you can try it - it's in Yast under systema admin/networks/configure ppp connection and 'should' be pretty straighforward. Give it a go and let me know how you go.
I follow the list but I'd appreciate you ccing me any updates on getting proxy going.
Regards, Graeme.

I'm running SuSE6.3 and i'm looking to run my server as a dial up proxy server. basically the modem would be my connection to the net, and eth0 the connection to my local lan, which has 4 systems on it. I figure I will be using a combination of ipchains and dial up script. what sthe best route to getting this up and going

You need IPMasquerading and Diald (for example). IPMasquerading is really easy to configure with SuSE, you only need to edit your /etc/rc.config and change this lines: MSQ_START="yes" MSQ_NETWORKS="192.168.0.0/24 192.168.1.0/24 192.168.2.0/24" MSQ_DEV="ppp0" This is for my lan home, that has three subnets(192.168.0.0 192.168.1.0 192.168.2.0, 24 is the netmask is equal to 255.255.255.0) and make external connections through analogic modem (ppp) that has serial port 0 (ppp0) After, do SuSEconfig Diald is easy to configure too. -- ---------------- Simeó Reig simeo@tinet.org Barcelona (SPAIN) ----------------- -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
I have two hard drives, 18GB and 8GB. I have Win98 installed on the C 7GB partition as hda1 using FAT32 and , then I left the rest as another FAT32 drive that I run games from as E:. The other drive has a 2GB partition as D: that I place my files on to burn to my CDR, it also is FAT32. The remaining 6GB (+-) space was left un-partitioned. I then booted to the SuSE Linux 6.2 CD and partitioned the 6GB space into a Linux swap partition at 140MB and the remainder as my primary Linux partition, which is /dev/hdc3. I am using Loadlin to boot to SuSE. I reboot my system to the MS-DOS prompt and then execute "linux hdc3" and Linux begins to boot. The problem is the system always gets to a specific point in the boot process and then stops, here is what I get: {misc about my 3Com 3C905B-TX card} SIOCSIFFLAGS: Resource temporarily unavailable SIOCSIFFLAGS: Resource temporarily unavailable failed route add default gw 207.218.25.1 Setting up route failed ... then here the system hangs and never comes back (well, I waited 10min and gave up). Anyone have any ideas what is happening here? Is there a problem because my other drives are FAT32? Is the problem with my Ethernet card? If I re-install, the OS goes on fine until I shut down and re-start again and then I get the same problem. I know there's nothing wrong with the OS provided on the CD because it installed on my Compaq Laptop just fine and is working well. Actually, I boot it every time by auto booting the CD and selecting to boot installed OS. When I try this with this PC, it says it can't find /dev/hdc3.
