I have run E out of cvs for months on both 5.2 and 5.3. I haven't compiled E in roughly a month out of cvs, but I really DOUBT you are correct in saying it needs glibc unless you are downloading RedHat rpms. The source will compile and RUN on both glibc and libc5 systems. These snapshots of course were all of DR15 (unofficial) and not the official DR14, and BOTH DR14 and DR15 compile and run on S.u.S.E. Maybe so, I did download rpm's from their site, and they did ask for glibc.so.6 so I must have gotten the RedHat RPM version. Damn my eyes!! I'll try the sources instead. Thanks again.
