How to change external monitors resolution
Hi! I'm running SuSE 8.1 on a Dell D600 which has a 1400x1050 TFT monitor, now I'd like to hook up a external monitor. And the one I have (DELL 2000FP) can handle 1600x1200 but when I connect it I get a 1280x1024 view of the 1400x1050 that is on the laptop monitor. And I can't find any way to change it. What am I supposed to do ? -- Roland

That depends, are you trying to use it as a second monitor ... or are you just replacing the TFT with the 1600x1200 one? If you just trying to replace it, you should run sax2 again, to set the proper timings for the monitor. If you want a second one, you should still try sax2 ... not sure if it will let you use a second monitor ... if not, you need to hand edit the X configuration file.

Actually I could do with either :-)

I'm not really trying to replace it, I'd love to have both working at the same resolution though.

Sax2 nerver realizes there is a second monitor. Any X configuration example I could try? -- Roland
I don't know if this will help but the dual head configuration I have on my SuSE 9 box requires that you use SaX2 and add a second copy of your current graphics card. under the Properties -> expert tab the bus ID has to be set to 1:0:0 instead of single on both copies of the card, and the screen ID on the first card designated as screen Primary screen 0 and the second card as Secondary screen 1. then add a monitor setting (vesa or other) to those cards individually and set resolution accordingly. the multihead mode lets you select either clone display, or Xineramma modes too.
