[SLE] Various Video Cards and 3D issues with 10.1
I am one of the people who has been pulling their hair out over sorting out non recognition of 3D video cards and Xgl. Right now my systems finally recognized my 3D video cards and are stable. Xgl does not work yet and I may have to wait until later releases for my cards to make it into the database. What stopped my system from crashing with both high end AGP ATI and nVidia cards was to go into my bios and turn down some of the setting for the AGP slots. Many of the high end video cards now want to handle the AGP duties themselves. By setting my AGP slots to Manual rather than Auto. I finally stopped the crashes and the inability of the system to see 3D capability. I have found this to work for a Radeon 9600XT and a nVidia 7800GS but not the ATI Radeon 1600 Pro. The higher end ATI card have some more driver issues for now. The 9600XT and 7800GS run Xgl but the features either are not their or they are not stable yet. Maybe by 10.2, Xgl will be more of a possibility. So if you are having stability issues, turn down your bios setting to the minimum and then gradually turn them up again individually till you hit a balance.
