[opensuse] CD boot
Hello; I have an old SuSE 9.1 CD that I would like to boot from. When I go to the Rescue installation it boots to a non-graphic terminal (I think run level 3). Can someone tell me how to start kde from the command line? Thanks -- Tony Alfrey tonyalfrey@earthlink.net "I'd Rather Be Sailing" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It is even runlevel 1.

That's not possible. The rescue system option always was a very minimal system only to fix things from command line. There is no graphical interface included. -- Bye, Stephan Barth Novell Technical Services, Worldwide Support Services Linux SUSE LINUX GmbH, GF: Felix Imendörffer, HRB 21284 (AG Nürnberg) Maxfeldstr. 5, D-90409 Nuremberg -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

startx Of course if you want it to always start with a desktop, you can edit /etc/inittab and change id:3:initdefault: to id:5:initdefault:. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I suggested that as well, and it did not work. I think the other responses on this list that the rescue environment that is set up is far too minimal for running something like X is correct. There is little chance that X and all are in other then RPMs waiting to be installed from the CD. And, on 9.1, I think X automatic configuration was, well, a dream of things to come. Sorry, I thought you were referring to an installed system, not rescue mode. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes, I tried startx but bash didn't know the command. But another poster thinks that there was no KDE on the Rescue system and someone else pointed out that there was no Live CD until later. But in the meantime, I think I traced my problem to a bad SATA controller and may not need to do this any more.
