I have samba 2.2 currently and will be upgrading to a newer version ASAP. Untill then i have been stumbling along rewriting smb.conf to try to get a win 98 and a win 2000 pro to use my linux box as a PDC. as well as sharing folders on the linux box with the win computers. i have DHCP and BIND 9 up and running and i have run 'useradd mname\$', 'smbpasswd -a -m mname', and 'smbpasswd -a uname'. There is probably an error or 2 in the following copy of my smb.conf file so if sombody could point out any horrific problems for me, and/or how to fix them, that would be great. also i have purposly # all the printer stuff because i don't have a printer hooked up yet, it is just one more thing to deal with and is on the back burner. thx scott. #------------------------ smb.conf Start ------------------------ # smb.conf is the main samba configuration file. You've tested that? In the past I've had heaps of problems with workgroup names with spaces. Not on the linux side, but on the windows side. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

I am not having any problems with the workgroup, i am having problems with setting up a domain for windows to log into. If i sound angry, i am not. Ah, well maybe it was machine names with spaces... I've been running Samba on about 5 sites for well in excess of 5 years (yeah, even before it was ready for prime time). The sites include medium size offices full of windows junkies and I run samba as the server in all of these. To date I've never found an excuse to set up a domain controller. Basically I think DCs are made for really big organizations or more likely just to spread MS FUD. I use the Linux server for everything, Mail, DNS, Time Servers, File Server, Print server, centralized backup, and syncronizing files between two different locations. Even a vpn or two. But never a DC. I must lead a sheltered life... ;-) -- _____________________________________ John Andersen
