I ran strace on it and the last things in the log is apparently a read of the KDE menu XML file (whatever that is), when a whole bunch of binary trash that apparently has something to do with MySQL, because mixed in with the binary chars are strings of text that are obviously potential MySQL error messages. What on earth doe KDE have to do with MySQL? And why all the binary stuff? I've never seen binary code in an strace before. At 10:40 PM 12/23/2001 -0600, you wrote:

This sounds like the interrupt problem

Edit lilo.conf and in the Global section add: append = "disableapic"

Tried it (yes I did remember to run /sbin/lilo :-) ) -- unfortunately it didn't fix the problem.

I have just installed SuSE 7.3 on a Gateway Solo 3900 for my boss. Everything is fine except KDE.

X was very easy to set up, and Windowmaker, twm, fvwm2 all run perfectly, no trouble at all (I haven't tried E or Gnome,m they aren't installed for space reasons).

But when I start KDE it locks the whole computer up when it gets to the "Loading Window Manager".

I can't even [CTRL]+[ALT]+[BACKSPACE].

I can reboot with SysRq, however that is the only thing I can do. I can't even ssh in from another computer once it locks up.

As I said, it's not X that's causing this, but rather KDE, because the other window managers cause no trouble.

I did install the newest KDE base available with YOU, and that didn't help.

I've never installed Linux on this particular laptop before (nor any other Gateway) so I have no idea if older versions worked or not.

The chipset is: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage Mobility P/M AGP 2x (rev 64)

If it makes any difference. running 24Bit@1024x768@70Hz.

I did run Sax2 manually after the installation finished, that didn't make any difference either way.

I didn't load any 3D modules of any kind.

Any ideas what's causing the lock up?
