Hi, I am attempting to install a Intel 2200BG Pro wireless card on an IBM R52 Thinkpad (intel centrino 1.7 Mhz 512 Mb RAM) running on SUSE 10.1 I tried following the HOWTO from SUSEWiki I removed the instances of ieee80211.h and then installed the firmware and then ieee80211 subsystem. Then while attempting to install the ipw2200 driver, I encountered the following errors. What should I do now? puneit@linux-fh4f:~/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4> su Password: linux-fh4f:/home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4 # make mkdir -p /home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4/tmp/.tmp_versions cp /lib/modules/2.6.16.13-4-default/net/ieee80211/.tmp_versions/*.mod /home/pune it/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4/tmp/.tmp_versions cp /lib/modules/2.6.16.13-4-default/net/ieee80211/.tmp_versions/../Modules.symve rs /home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4 make -C /lib/modules/2.6.16.13-4-default/build M=/home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2 200-1.1.4 MODVERDIR=/home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4/tmp/.tmp_versions m odules make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.16.13-4-obj/i386/default' make -C ../../../linux-2.6.16.13-4 O=../linux-2.6.16.13-4-obj/i386/default modul es CC [M] /home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4/ipw2200.o /home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4/ipw2200.c: In function ‘ipw_pci_probe’: /home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4/ipw2200.c:11612: error: ‘debug’ undecla red (first use in this function) /home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4/ipw2200.c:11612: error: (Each undeclare d identifier is reported only once /home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4/ipw2200.c:11612: error: for each functi on it appears in.) make[4]: *** [/home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4/ipw2200.o] Error 1 make[3]: *** [_module_/home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4] Error 2 make[2]: *** [modules] Error 2 make[1]: *** [modules] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.16.13-4-obj/i386/default' make: *** [modules] Error 2 linux-fh4f:/home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4 # clear linux-fh4f:/home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4 # make mkdir -p /home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4/tmp/.tmp_versions cp /lib/modules/2.6.16.13-4-default/net/ieee80211/.tmp_versions/*.mod /home/pune it/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4/tmp/.tmp_versions cp /lib/modules/2.6.16.13-4-default/net/ieee80211/.tmp_versions/../Modules.symve rs /home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4 make -C /lib/modules/2.6.16.13-4-default/build M=/home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2 200-1.1.4 MODVERDIR=/home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4/tmp/.tmp_versions m odules make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.16.13-4-obj/i386/default' make -C ../../../linux-2.6.16.13-4 O=../linux-2.6.16.13-4-obj/i386/default modul es CC [M] /home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4/ipw2200.o /home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4/ipw2200.c: In function ‘ipw_pci_probe’: /home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4/ipw2200.c:11612: error: ‘debug’ undecla red (first use in this function) /home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4/ipw2200.c:11612: error: (Each undeclare d identifier is reported only once /home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4/ipw2200.c:11612: error: for each functi on it appears in.) make[4]: *** [/home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4/ipw2200.o] Error 1 make[3]: *** [_module_/home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4] Error 2 make[2]: *** [modules] Error 2 make[1]: *** [modules] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.16.13-4-obj/i386/default' make: *** [modules] Error 2 linux-fh4f:/home/puneit/bin/Downloads/ipw2200-1.1.4 # -- Puneit Singh 0091-9350832020
I can't help you specifically with this but I can tell you that I just helped a friend install 10.1 on IBM Lenovo X41 notebook and it had this wireless card built in. Some how the installation process found the card and everything just worked at the end of the installation. I am surprised if you card was present at installation it didn't just come up and work. I was amazed. In another laptop that I own it uses a newer Intel wireless card ipw3945abg I had to install an RPM that SUSE supplied to get it to work rpm ipw3945d version 1.7.18-9.

This is a code bug in the driver. It's trying to use a symbol which hasn't been declared ("debug"). Without seeing the code, i can't say more than that. You should report this to the ipw2200 guys. -- ----- stephan@s11n.net http://s11n.net "...pleasure is a grace and is not obedient to the commands of the will." -- Alan W. Watts

i don't know if this is enough, but at the very least you need to do the following Edit the file ipw2200.c and go to line 11612, it looks like ipw_debug_level = debug; Add one line before and one line after, so it becomes #ifdef CONFIG_IPW2200_DEBUG ipw_debug_level = debug; #endif then try building it again

I did as you instructed and it complied without errors... I still need to check and test the connectivity to wifi network. That I can only do on Monday. Thanks a lot -- Puneit Singh 0091-9350832020

My Acer has the same chipset and it was automatically recognised by 9.2, 10.0 and 10.1, even set up the WPA-PSK key during the initial setup. The Acer is a 1.6Ghz 512MB Centrino with 2200BG, so I can't see why the chipset on the IBM isn't automatically recognised... -- David Wright Wright Information Services Europa "I got to go figure," the tenant said. Yeah, I've found a bit of an oddity. The other week, I installed 10.1 from the OpenSuSE site over 10.0 on my Dell laptop with that chip. 9.3 and 10.0 had worked perfectly out of the box. 10.1, on the other hand, forced me to download some firmware prior to enabling the wlan. I then installed 10.1 again on the same laptop - this time using Linux Magazine DVD as the source. The wireless card was recognized right off and configured without a hitch. I wonder if there's differences between the "sources" of the software that we're getting. -- Kai Ponte www.perfectreign.com || www.4thedadz.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request
