[SuSE Linux] /etc/rc.config and /etc/inittab
Hi, I new to Linux but I m having great time with this System. I like to replace the graphical login available with SUSE 5.3 (i.e xdm or kdm) with the Login.app from Per Liden with a custom image from Largo's page ( <A HREF="http://wm.current.nu/misc.html"><A HREF="http://wm.current.nu/misc.html</A">http://wm.current.nu/misc.html</A</A>> ) I'm able to build the app, however ... the builder asks 3 questions , 2 are tough for me to answer + Do you use glibc (libc6) Y/n I answered no + Do you use shadow password Y/n I answered no Are my answers correct ( SUSE 5.3 ) for the libc I m confident ( Am I wrong ??) For the shadow stuff I never ask to install shadow passwd but I found a non empty /etc/shadow file So maybe I m using them ??? How can I find out ?? Anyway I rebuilt the app with shadow set to yes and It s not login either !!! I understand that to start this app automatically I have to modify my /etc/inittab I choose initlevel 3 as the default ( for X to start, right ???) and at the end of file I add a line ( see below an excerpt of the /etc/inittab ) # This is for the package xdmsc, after installing and # and configuration you should remove the comment character # from the following line: #7:2:respawn:+/sbin/init.d/rx tty7 # I put this 7:2:respawn:/usr/X11R6/bin/Login.app >& /dev/null in the mean time I found in the /etc/rc.config a line ( which can be accessed from YAST) which gives you the choice for login console/xdm/kdm, I put console) I reboot ( having lit the candles, crossed the fingers, looked at the stars mumbling <<<---- yes I was a Zindow$$ user :)) the app run smoothly but I cannot log in which in this case is kind of annoying :) for a ... login app !! If I comment out the line in which I starting login app, I have xdm starting and I can log in !! Of course Im not asking about login app itself Did I put the line starting login app in the wrong place ?? How do you determine if you are using shadow passwords ?? Is the rc.config more like an info file for the system to boot than a config file ?? because I choose console and got xdm probably because I set the initdefault to 3 in the inittab which is really a config file where should I look to find documentation on those issues ??? ( I asked Per Liden already) thanks in advance for your answers Best regards GH Portefait P.S If anyone is interested in achieving this too, please don't send mail to Per, wrote to the list so I know you are interested, and I post the results as soon as it works :) -- "Computers are like air conditioners - they stop working properly when you open Windows" -----BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK----- Version: 3.1 GCS/CC d-@ s+:- C++(++++)UL++>++++ P++>++++ L++>+++ E-W+(++) N++ !o K- w !O M(++) V? !PS !PE y+ PGP+++ t+ 5?
