What client you'll need to make the connection depends on whether your ISP uses PPPoE or not, and whether or not you use a router. Unfortunately, my ISP uses PPPoE over Nortel's "1-Meg Modem", and that's why I am able to recommend to you Roaring Penguin's PPPoE client. It's available at

Now for a bonehead question. Can someone point me to a resource that explains how DSL works, i.e. what exactly is required to make a direct DSL connection between two arbitrary machines over a phone line, besides the router and appropriate client software on one end? I.e. what does the "host" machine need to have?
Thanks
