Re: Apt-get problems & questions
i just installed apt-get, after reading about it in many posts. After running apt-get update there was some seemingly odd output, i attached the whole session, but essentially for every package it said "WARNING: 'hwinfo' has 2 packages with same version but different dependencies. That usually means a packaging bug." This repeats for every different patch or package. Does the two package warning have anything to do with the fact i have two listings in sources.list? Or does it have to do with the patch rpm's? maybe i should stop guessing! here is what i have in sources.list, besides the commented debian stuff. rpm ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt SuSE/8.0-i386 base usr-local-bin funktronics packman-i386 packman-noarch update kde gnome gnome2 mozilla ximian extra security rpm-src ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt SuSE/8.0-i386 base usr-local-bin funktronics packman-i386 packman-noarch update kde gnome gnome2 mozilla ximian extra security Also, was i supposed to remove the debian listings in /etc/sources.list? I've since commented them out, so that should remove the beginning 404 errors, i hope. i installed apt-0.3.19CVS-20011212.i386.rpm libapt-0.3.19CVS-20011212.i386.rpm is that all i need? I'll probably get synaptic tomorrow. Thanks Franklin,
The URL http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/home.html states "To have APT work correctly you need a clean and consistent system. This is the case for sure after a clean install, if the user did not install software using rpm's --nodeps/--force arguments and did not install software from the sources. If you have e.g. software installed from source, APT may fail to find the required files though they are present on your system (as they are not registered in the rpm database). In case your system is not "APT clean" APT will advice to have e.g. installed packages removed. You can work towards an APT clean system, by investigating the reported rpms individually with the apt-get -S install < rpm package>. APT will tell you in more detail why it needs to perform a certain action (mostly removing a package). " And "Refer to <http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/different-versions.html> in case you are confronted with the following error message: 2 packages with same version but different dependencies. Thanks, Before installing I read that first part about the clean system and I hadn't used the force ... sorry couldn't resist. , but i wasn't aware about the YOU problem. But it makes sense now. In the readme about the newer apt it said synaptic wasn't fuctional, so I'm going to stay with this one. So is there a way to remove the YOU updates? Or just save my /home/framau and reinstall? I knew I shouldn't have run YOU the other day! Just updated everything too. On Tue, 2002-08-27 at 00:38, W.D.McKinney wrote:

What you do is this... rpm -q <package name> ex. rpm -q NVIDIA_kernel This will return the versions that rpm thinks are installed and most of the time both versions. I've found that you can do an "rpm --rebuilddb" and it will bitch about the 2nd entry and delete it from it's db. After this you can run apt-get just fine. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. I tell you what you should see.
