LVM system unbootable after 9.1 kernel update
Greetings, I had a recent disk failure on my 8.0 system and decided to install 9.1 on a big disk with LVM. The install went beautifully, but I soon discovered that sound didn't work (SoundBlaster) and learned a kernel update should fix the problem. As a long-time reader and sometime contributor to this list, I was aware that YOU for 9.1 had problems, and so was careful in selecting only security and kernel updates when I ran it. On rebooting, as recommended, the system was unable to load any modules, thus X, network and many other services failed to start. I then tried to downgrade to the install CD kernel, but was unable to get mkinitrd to run because it claimed no root mount point was defined in /etc/fstab (see below). The "Rescue system" boot option was unable to mount the LVM root volume, or any other, even though the lvm utilities were able to see them on the disk. I was able to do a reinstall without formatting, so I didn't lose any significant data, but here is my question: How to I do a kernel update without breaking LVM again? I didn't find anything helpful with Google or on SuSE SDB. Hi, i have similar problems on SuSE 9.0 (2.4.21-231 and 2.4.21-238). I can't handle lvms anymore. The existing work, but i cannot remove snapshots. Someone thought that might be a principle problem in modulehandlicng, but i didn't get any help until now...
