[S.u.S.E. Linux] Playing au and wav in Netscape

I have been attempting to play au and wav files in Netscape Communicator 4.04. At the command prompt level this is easy. I have tried 'play' as the application to play wav files from Netscape and all I get is a message back saying that the file length is wrong. For au, I know cat filename.au > /dev/audio can be used but how do I do this in the form of a Netscape usable application? Or are there other players that are usable?
