Hi, I wonder how can I use one UPS on 3 Linux machines. I want connect low battery signal to all of them and get them shut down. Is there any solution or I must use 3 UPSs Bye, Ivan Gustin
Connect the UPS to one Linux, the master. It tells the slaves to shutdown, wait a period for comfirmation, shuts itself down and turns off the UPS. Details depend on the UPS brand and model and which UPS software you are using. Jeffrey Quoting Ivan Gustin <ivan.gustin@pu.tel.hr>:

Wow... Great. But, *how* tells the slaves to shutdown? UPS software on master, or must I write some script? (I don't use any UPS monitoring software by now). Bye, Ivan Gustin

Start with telling us what UPS you have. APC makes their software source available, though I am told it does not use the smart mode. The SuSE 7.1 CDs have argoups, smartups, and upsilon. I could not get smartups to work with my APC Back-UPS 650. It detected power failure but never detected low battery and so never did the shutdown. I use the APC SSD package. The communication between slaves and masters is over the LAN. HTH, Jeffrey Quoting Ivan Gustin <ivan.gustin@pu.tel.hr>:

None. I am going to buy one, so I ask before.

?!? Why?
I use the APC SSD package.
Works OK? Can it work in master/slave mode, with +2 Linux machines?
The communication between slaves and masters is over the LAN.
OK, but how? Can APC SSD do this communication? Bye, Ivan Gustin

Look on the CDs and the Web (e.g., http://www.vlug.org/linux/links/Hardware_Related/UPS's_-_Batteries/ for the packages and see which ones are supported. Jeffrey Quoting Ivan Gustin <ivan.gustin@pu.tel.hr>:

Do you know where I can get "free" software for a Junior UPS cause the factory that sold me the UPS wants to charge me 100 bucks for the software and the serial a cable, do you think that is a fair price? Raúl _______________________ Raul Gutierrez Segales oxford@campoalto.edu.py

Try the package smartups. Its on the CDs. It will do what you want. Just read the documentation and, if you know a bit of soldering, make your own cable. No, it is too much for this. Cable is very simple, there is connection scheme on many sites (or in UPS documentation), and you have at least few free UPS monitoring software on Linux.
